THIS DA.T>B TEZEGSJIMS. Dunedin, August 9. W. H. Tolmie, M.H.R,., died last evening, at seven o'clock. He had been ill some time, but nothing serious was anticipated. Fred Wain did 100 miles in 23 hours 44 minutes, and won the stakes of £SO.
The Mabel disqualification case is coming up again. It appears that the mare, when the property of Mr Hutchison, was disqualified for suspicious riding. She was then
sold as a hack to Mr Doyle, and subsequentlypurchased by Dr Murphy, who is nowmaking great efforts with the committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club to get the disqualification removed.
Wellington, August 9. Seven miles north of Kekeranga, near Kaikoura, a plank eight feet long, apparently from a ship's side, has been picked up. It appears to be fresh washed ashore. It has the name " Peerless " in gilt letters on a blue ground on it. [Pbess Agency.] Wellington, August 7. In the estimates now before the House the sum of £IO,OOO i 3 put down for a second cable across Cook's Straits; also a sum of £6OO per annum for an inspector of prisons. August 8. Arrived— Easby from Sydney early this morning. She brings ho later news, having left the same day as the Cyphrenes. On returning to Sydney she discharged her deck load of timber. Greymouth, August 7.
The O'Connell Centenary Celebration yesterday was a great success. A procession took place in the afternoon, consisting of the fire brigade, mens bers of the Hibernian and St Patrick Societies, and the general public, extending over half a mile in length. Open air addresses were delivered amidst great enthusiasm. The proceedings wound up with a banquet and ball, both being numerously attended.
