CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, July 28.

(Before G. L. Mellisli, Esq., R.M., and W. H. Pilliett, Esq., J.P.) Drunk and Disorderly.— The following inebriates were dealt with John Murray, fined 5s ; Margaret Ellison, an old offender, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor ; Henry Wilson was fined 60s ; and James McConachie ss.

Travelling with an Improper Ticket. —Charles Stewart was charged with travelling from Lyttelton by rail the previous day with a ticket of Monday’s date, and also with refusing to pay his fare when requested to do so. On the application of accused, the case was adjourned until to-morrow for the production of a witness. Illegally Pawning. —lsrael Luke -was charged on remand with illegally pawning a watch, the property of James McConachie. The accused, when being arrested by Mounted-constable Watts at Ashburton, said that the day after he took the watch he told the prosecutor all about it, who promised not to prosecute him. H. A. Alexander, shopman at Stewart’s pawn shop, produced a watch which had been pawned with him by accused on 15th July last. He (witness) had advanced £2 on the watch. The accused said it was his own at the time. Robert Falloon stated that on the 16th July he purchased the pawn-ticked produced for a watch from the accused. Gave him 5s for it. James McConachie deposed to the watch produced being his. Had it last in his possession on the 7th or Sth of April. Never gave the accused any authority to dispose of it in any way. Valued the watch at £B. By prisoner—You told me you took the watch off me when I was tight, and that you were going to send it up to me. In reply to the Bench, prisoner said he was at the Bush Inn when he took the w'atch from the prosecutor to take care of it, as he was drunk at the time. He afterwards told McConachie that he would get the watch for him, and he said it would be all right. The prisoner was committed for trial at the next criminal sessions of the Supreme Court.
