The following particulars of the native murder at Kangiriri, have been received by telegraph from Mercer. The natives reported to the police here, that a Maori woman had been murdered by her husband (named Ropoutu), three miles from Kangiriri. Her body is said to be horribly mutilated, being nearly cut in two by a tomahawk, the body was buried by the Maories. The murderer escaped to the back country, pursued by the natives and mounted police, who started to investigate the matter. New Plymouth, July 24. The cutter Hero has been picked up off Waitara, abandoned by the crew. The hull had sustained no damage, but the mast had snapped off, and was in the water, with the mainsail by its side. The sail had two reefs in it. It is supposed that the crew have been picked up by some vessel passing. The ship’s papers show that she was on the 20th in latitude 39,28 south. Wellington, July 24. Information was given to the police that a man was lying near the Roman Catholic Cemetery, shot through the head. On proceeding to the spot they found that the person in question was a young man named Edward Walter Church, in the employment of Wilson and Richardson, drapers, Lambton Quay. He was not dead, but evidently severely wounded. A pistol was lying by his side. Dr Harding was in attendance, and had him removed to the hospital, where all was done that possibly could be, but no hopes were entertained of his recovery, and at 2 p.m. he died. The ball had entered the near jaw, and had glanced upwards dividing one of the arteries in the head, but not grazing the skull. It appears that Church, who was a very steady young man, not being at his usual post this morning, one ef his employers sent up to his lodgings, and learned that he had left for business as usual. The next thing heard of him was his discovery as above stated. He is about twenty years of age, a comparatively recent arrival, having come out by the Hindostan. No reason for the act has been ascertained. Nelson, July 24. The steamer Murray arrived this afternoon from Wanganui, towing the schooner Esther, produce-laden, from Lyttelton to Greymouth. which had drifted from her anchorage off Rangitata on Tuesday night, and ran on to the rocks. The Murray discovered her in going to Wanganui on Wednesday, and rendered every assistance to the crew in getting her off the rocks, and picked her up on her return this morning, and towed her to Nelson. The greater portion of the cargo is damaged, but a good deal of the bacon and flour is uninjured. Dunedin, July 24. A smart shock of earthquake was felt yesterday at Taieri, at twenty minutes past 4 a.m. At the enquiry re Flexman’s fire, the jury returned a verdict that there was nothing to show how the fire originated.
