A ship was signalled from the southward at noon to-day. She is still outside the heads, and will probably prove to be either the Oriana or Star of China. The s.s. Taranaki arrived in harbour this morning from Dunedin, She sails North this evening. Nothing further has been seen of the barque that was sighted last night. Alhambra left Hobson’s Bay at 2.30 p.m. on the 10th July, with a full complement of passengers and cargo: cleared Port Phillip Heads at 615 p.m.; passed Wilson’s Promontory at 5.30 a.m. on the lo'lowing morning; light westerly winds prevailed during the first three days, and moderate south and south-east winds and fine weather afterwards ; arrived In the Hokitika roadstead at 10 a.m. on the 16th. A thick fog necessitated Captain Bowden to stop her several times, and prevented her being in time for the morning tide; remained there until 7.30 a.m. Arrived at Greymoulh at 10 a.m.; left at 11 a.m. Arrived at Nelson at 11 a.m. 18th ; left at 0 p.m. 19th. Arrived at Wellington at 10.30 a.m. on 20th; left at 3.15 p.m. on 21st, and experienced strong S.E. gale; arriving at Lyttelton at 7.46 p.m. last night. She sails at H a.m. to-day. The White Rose was towed up to an anchorage off Kipa Island yesterday afternoon, by the s.s. Gazelle. . , , The Union Steam Company’s s.s. Bruce arrived In harbor yesterday at 8 a.m., from Dunedin, via Timaru and Akaroa. She left Port Chalmers at 4.30 p.m. on the 20th instant; arrived Timaru 3.30 a.m. on the 21st; discharged cargo, and left at 5 p.m. same day; arrived Akaroa 2.30 a.m. on the 23nd; left at 4 a.m.; experienced fine weather; arriving as above. Of passenger steamers the next largest to the Great Eastern is the City of Berlin, recently launched at Greenock for the Inman line. Her length Is 484 feet, and her breadth only 44, so that this proportion is as eleven to one, or, reckoning her length overall, 612 feet, as nearly twelve to one. The vessels which come next in size are the City ot Pekin, the Liguria, the Britannia, the City of Richmond, and the Bothnia, in the order named. Two of these, the Pekin and the Liguria, belong to the Pacific Company.
