Betting at start; 2 to 1 agst Galopin, 100 to 12 agst Balfe, 9 to 1 agst Camballo, 100 to 8 agst the Repentance colt, 100 to 7 each agst Claremont and Bay of Naples, 22 to 1 each agst Temple Bar and Earl of Dartrej, 25 to 1 each agst Woodlands, Seymour, and Breechloader, 33 to 1 each agst Telescope and Fareham, 50 to 1 agst Lord Berners, 66 to 1 agst Gilbert, and 100 to 1 each agst Garterly Bell, and Earlston. With theexception of the favourite, who was saddled at The Warren, and cantered by himself on the top of the hill, all the horses appeared in the paddock, and took part in the usual preliminaries to a big race. The flag was hoisted only a few minutes behind time, and after four breaks away, in each of which Galopin was most anxious to begin, the signal was given at 3,20 to an excellent stare, Fareham and Telescope being the first in action. They were followed by Seymour, Breechloader, Claremont, Lord Berners, Bay of Naples, Temple Bar, and the Repentance colt in a cluster, until passing Sherwood’s, when Seymour, on the inside, bore his colours to the fore, with Breechloader in waiting. At the heels of this pair laid Telescope, Fareham, and Lord Berners until approaching the furzes, when the last-named dropped behind Earlston and Temple Bar, and went on with Woodlands, Balfe, Claremont, and Bay of Naples at the head of the second division. The last three from the post were Camballo, Punch, and Gilbert, and Galopin was only just ahead of them to the mile post, when- he drew into the ruck, and took his place on the whip hand of Balfe, with whom he ran head and head to the top of the hill, where, accompanied by Woodlands, he made a further improvement in his position. At this point a material increase in the pace caused Telescope to beat a very sudden retreat, and with Earlston a l so in difficulties directly they commenced the descent, Fareham and Woodlands were left in pursuit of the Bedford Lodge pair until
half way down, when Bay of Naples and Galopin passed Temple Bar, and became very conspicuous on the right. At the same time the Repentance colt was creeping up in the track of Seymour, just in the rear of Balfe, Claremont, and Lord Berners, and so they ran until nearing Tattenham Corner, when Breechloader and Woodlands hung out signals of distress, and were unable to keep their places as they entered the straight. The command was still retained by Seymour on the inside, with Bay of Naples and Fareham in handy attendance to the road, where Galopin, on the right, shot by the last named pair as if they were standing still, and “ then and there” won the race by taking up the running from Seymour. Of the remainder that were conspicuous at this stage, Temple Bar and Claremont occupied centre berths, with Balfe, Lord Berners, and Bay of Naples between them and Galopin, while Lord Falmouth’s representatives were in the track of the persevering Seymour until a quarter of a mile from home, when the Repentance colt passed him next the rails, and for a few strides showed a bold font. Already, however, the issue had teen reduced to a match by the addition of Temple Bar and Balfe to the beaten lot, as Galopin, with Claremont in pursuit, was coming away stride by stride, and although the Prince’s colt seem to hang a little until Morris took a “ steadier” opposite the bell, Claremont was beginning to “ die out” at the time, and he sustained a very clever —if not easy—defeat by a length. At an interval of at least six lengths the Repentance colt was a bad third, while the stoppage of Temple Bar the instant he had been deprived of the chance of a situation, enabled Garterly Bell, who was ridden out” to the end, to finish fourth, and Seymour fifth, necks separating the three. Then behind “The Bar” came Punch, Bay of Naples, and Balfe, these being separated by another wide gap from Earl of Dartrey, Gilbert, Caraballo, and Woodlands, while Telescope did not pass the Dost, and left Breechloader to finish last of the remainder. Run in 2min 48sec. Nett value of the stakes, £4975. DESCRIPTION OF THE WINNER. Galopin, by Vedette out of Flying Duchess, by The Flying Dutchman out of Merope, by Voltaire, is a dark bay colt, standing about 15 hands 8 inches high, of fair size and substance all through. His head and neck are somewhat plain, but he has a good back and loins, capital shoulders well set on a deep brisket, lengthy quarters, muscular arms and thighs, strong flat legs, and fairish feel.
