SPORTING.
The steeplechases to be run to-morrow over the old Sandhills course have not as yet produced much speculation. There are, however, the chances of a good day’s sport, though the weather at the time of writing looks anything but promising. The going is deep, and the fences require jumping, so that I think the slow and sure sort will have the best of it at the finish. For the principal event of the day 1 fancy Ivanhoe, as I think, though the old horse is getting rather into years, that he will get round safely, while I am by no means sure that Medora will. 1 never was an admirer of this mare, and do not think she will be successful tomorrow. If the ground was sound and light Mousetrap would bo formidable; but as it is, I do not imagine that the little grey will
troublesome. Kapai I knew nothing whatever about; but in Dan O’Brien’s hands he will be made the most of, and if he cannot win it will be because he is not good enough, Royalty can have no show, and I do not believe in the chances of either Muscatel or Speculation. In conclusion, I shall plump for Ivanhoe as the winner, and I shall expect to see Medora and Mousetrap his immediate attendants. With regard to the other events, I shall offer no opinion, as the handicap for the Linwood stakes will greatly depend on the running in the first event, and the Hack race I do not presume to meddle with. As the catering is to be under the management of Maples Brothers, visitors to the course may rest contented that their wants will be properly supplied. All that is required to make the meeting a success is that the weather should be fine, and I can only hope that this may be the case, when I shall expect to see the largest attendance that has ever collected to witness a steeplechase in Canterbury. Hermit.
