Mr Heneage's ch h Freeman, 1 ; Mr Pallet's b c by Distin, 2 ; Lord Aylesford's ch c Dukedom, 3. Followed by Ben Battle, Prodigal, Quail, Herbert, Polonaise, and The Black Watch. Betting—3 to 1 agst Freeman, 4to 1 agst The Black Watch, 9 to 1 agst Ben Battle, 10 to 1 agst Dukedom, Quail, Herbert, and Polonaise, 100 to 6 agst the Production colt, and 20 to 1 agst Prodigal. They got away at the first attempt, and after settling into places the runniDg was taken up by Freeman, attended by Black Watch inside, and by Herbert and Polonaise on his whip hand ; clear of them succeeded Quail and Dukedom, who were followed by the Production colt,Ben Battle, and Prodigal, the latter of whom was tailed off early, and acted as whipper-in from start to finish. After rounding the workhouse turn the front lot opened out, and Herbert running through his horses took the lead, Polonaise going on second, Black Watch third, to the T.Y.C. post, where Ben Battle joined the latter, and the two went on side by side, followed some distance off by Quail, Freeman, the Production colt, and Dukedom, in the order named, separated by clear intervals. Halfway along the Dee side Polonaise deprived Herbert of the lead, but the latter rejoined her at the Grosvenor turn, and had a slight advantage on passing the stand the last time, at which point the lot, with the exception of Prodigal, had drawn into closer order, owing to the pace slackening up the straight. Close up with the two leaders Quail now lay third, and alongside of her were Black Watch and Ben Battle, which three were clear of Freeman, Dukedom, and the Production colt; but, as in the previous round, Ben Battle again lost his place immediately afterwards through inability to get round the turns, whilst Freeman appeared to be so thoroughly outpaced that he became last but one at the workhouse turn beyond. At the railway arches Polonaise resumed the lead, and Herbert having shot his bolt was passed by Black Watch and Quail, who went on second and third to the T.Y.C. poßt, where Quail gave way to Ben Battle and Freeman, the latter of whom came along the Deeside, followed several lengths off by Dukedom and Production colt, who were the only remaining stragglers left with a chance. At the Grosvenor bridge the pace began to slacken, and the lot drew close together in rounding the turn, where Black Watch was beaten, and Freeman, with Dukedom in his track, deprived Polonaise of the lead. When fairly in the straight the favorite came out with the race in hand, followed by Lord Aylesford's horse to the distance, when the Production colt came with a rush, but failed to overhaul the favorite, who won—all out—by a length, the outsider beating Dukedom for second money by a couple. Ben Battle was fourtr, as far from the third, Polonaise fifth, and the Black Watch sixth, succeeded a long way off by Quail, Herbert, and Prodigal. Run in 4min B£sec. In the minor items of the day's programme, the City Stakes were won by Rhapsodist, the Duke of Westminster Plate by Arbitrator, and the Chesterfield Flying Stakes by Blue Rock.
