The charge of forcible entry by a Thames landlord into his own property for the purpose of ejecting a tenant in possession, was heard in the Supreme Court to-day. A verdict of “Guilty” was returned. The Judge said the accused had no doubt been badly advised. He fined the landlord £ls, and the person who assisted was fined Is. The mail steamer leaves to-morrow. The ship Forfarshire encountered a severe cyclone on the way, which carried away the main and foretopgallant masts and several sails. The immigrants are all well. Wellington, July 8. To-night’s Tribune says ;—“We are sorry to learn that latterly the relations between Sir Julius Vogel and Dr Featherston are not so cordial as their joint connection with the public business of the colony renders desirable. There is a general complaint of lack of official reticence on the part of the Agent-General.” Dunedin, July 8. In the case Herbert v the Waste Lands Board, an appeal case in which an interim injunction was granted by the Judge in Chambers on Monday last, restraining the Board from dealing with lands in Herriott Hundreds, Mr Macassey movtd for a rule nisi. The object of the rule was to call upon Donald Reid, Horace Bastings, and Henry Clark, members of the Waste Lands Board, to show cause why they should not be attached and committed to the public gaol, Dunedin, for a breach of the aforesaid interim junction. The rule was granted, made returnable on Wednesday next. The present annual income of the City Council is £123,692, and liabilities £109,188, including £2458 due to the Bank of New Zealand. At the City Council meeting last night, Mr Richie, as attorney for Mr Hankey, wrote, offering to sell the gas works and plant to the city for £60,000, to be taken in corporation debentures, bearing interest at 6 per cent at par, delivery in September. A special meeting of the Council will be held on Friday to consider the matter. Mr Bates was a great success as “ Hamlet” last night. OAMARU, July 8. The Northern Pastoral and Agricultural Association have agreed to co-operate with the Southland Association to endeavour to obtain an annual grant from the Assembly to all such societies in the colony. Mr Cuthhertson is to move in the matter in the House. A petition has been sent here from Dunedin for signature against legislative action before the general election re abolition. The petition is not favorably received. An application, with thirty-two signatures, has been forwarded to Wellington, tendering the services of the Cam aru Volunteer Artillery. Five competitive schemes of waterworks have been received. Tue competitors are Messrs Barr and Oliver, Dunedin ; Hardy, Johnston, Lees and Moore, and Forester. The Oamaru and Waitaki, Kakanui and Oamaru creeks, are suggested sources of supply. The estimates are from £IO,OOO to £BB,OOO. Hokitika, July 9. At the sale yards at Arahura beef averaged 42s 6d per lOOlbs. No sheep in the market.
