THIS DAY’S TELEGRAMS.
Wellington, July 5. Arrived—The Mera, Canterbury, and Flying Cloud, from Lyttelton. A new commission of the peace has just been issued. Auckland, July 5. There was a terrific N. W. gale last night, and considerable damage was done to the small coast craft in the harbor. A number of fences were blown down, but there is no record of any loss of life. Wanganui, July 5. An unusually sharp earthquake occurred early yesterday morning. It was preceded and followed by lesser ones for several hours, and occasional noises like distant artillery firing were heard. The direction of the shock was from N. E. to S. W. Some crockery was shaken off shelves, but no other damage was done.
