The Tasmanian annual agricultural and stock returns show that on Ist April, 1875, the total stock of wheat and flour on hand was 1,187,483 bushels. The estimated consumption for the population, 104,200 at six bushels per head, and seed for 57,500 acres, at two bushels per acre, together 740,200 bushels, would leave a surplus of 447,283 bushels, or 152,654 bushels more than the surplus of the preceding year. The average yield was 18.51 bushels, against only 15,66 in 1874, 17.63 in 1872, and 14.09 in 1872. The land under cultivation had been increased by 2381 acres, and 3880 of new land had been broken up during the year. The area under rotation of crops was only 13,880 acres, against 18,108 in 1874. The highest average crops were :—Wheat— Franklin, 24 bushels ; barley—-Hobart Town, 45 bushels ; oats—Longford, 32 bushels per acre. In oats there was an increase of 315,996 bushels, potatoes 1200 tons, and hay 12,714 tons. Hops showed a decrease of 17,5601 b ; and tobacco had fallen from 73,5241 b in 1873 to 12,2461 b in 1874, and 21501 bin 1875. The use of machinery in agriculture is increasing, as while 5728 acres of wheat were reaped by machine in 1874, there were 9524 acres so reaped in 1875. Returns had been sent in by 6745 persons in 1875, against 6371 in 1874. Live stock returns have also been received from a much larger number of persons. They show the following number of stock .'—Horses, 23,208; cattle, 110,450 ; sheep, 1,714,168; goats, 2579 ; mules, 10 ; asses, 13 ; pigs, 51,468. This is an increase over the numbers of 1874 of 596 horses, 4142 cattle, 223,422 sheep, 378 goats, 7 mules, and 10 asses, and a decrease of 8160 pigs.
