[Pee Hero.] The produce telegram of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) dated London, 18th June, is as follows The wool sales comprise about 272,000 bales ; 0000 bales have been withdrawn ; 135,000 taken for the Continent. The sales closed at an average improvement of Id to J-d on the last sales’ prices. The piincipal advance has been in cross-bred and suptrior washed clothing. For medium and inferior greasy, the market is rather easier ” A. telegram from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, dated, London, June 20lh, states that the stock of tallow of all sorts amounts to 17000 casks ; mutton is worth £43 per ton ; beef, £4l ; Adelaide wheat, 4s 7d ; New Zealand hemp, £26 per ton. The public sales comprised 500 bales. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, June 26. The Cyphrenes arrived yesterday, a day in advance of the contract time. The Australian Steam Navigation Company’s steamer Rangatira, Levuka to New Caledonia, was wrecked on the 31st of May, off the Isle of Pines, New Caledonia. All bands were saved. The Government has completed the arrangements with the Australian Steam Navigation Company for the continuance of the temporal y Pacific mail. The service stallion Blair Athol, of the value of £3OOO, was stolen, but has been discovered shot and mutilated in o.der to prevent identification. It is supposed the thieves determined on this course to prevent discovery, Melbourne, June 22. Jum Pong, a Chinaman, has been committed for trial on a charge of having murdered Rengelman at Bet Bet, A laboring man named Maurice Williams, at Emerald Hill, has committed suicide on account of inability to work. The tender of James M'Ewan has been accepted for rails and fastenings of the Deniliquin and Moana railway at £41,000. Flour and wheat are firmer, the latter selling at ss; Children’s tobaccos, Is to Is 8-Jd; maize, 4s 7d to 4s Bd. Frank Stephen is about to send his lifeboat on a trip to Sydney. Leggatt, an old sailor, and his son proceed here with a fortnight’s provisions. The preliminary trial will be made to-morrow. Letters from King’s Island state that efforts to raise the Blencathra are proceeding satisfactorily, A butcher named David Glennon has been fined £lO and five guineas costs for exposing diseased meat in the public market. There is an advance of 15s on refined sugars. There have been large sales of lloui at 2s 6d advance. Mauritius advices stab that rain had fallen, and the cane on thi seaboard estates promises much better. Wheat, 5s 2d. The Beech worth coach between Yuccadandah and Wcdonga capsized, and was
carried a hundred yards down a creek. The driver narrowly escaped drowning, and the mails were lost. McEwan’s estate has been sequestrated. At a meeting of McEwan’s creditois the Colonial Bank made an offer to buy or sell the estate for 6s in the £. Thomas Luke and Co, tea merchants, have called a meeting of creditors. Barrett’s sentence to death has been commuted to life imprisonment. The Roman Catholic Bishop Crane had a most enthusiastic reception at Beechworth to-day. A London telegram states that the overdue ship Canada struck on a sunken rock, and put into Mauritius leaky. A man named Gell has been committed by the coroner at Buniugung for causing the death of his wife. At the inquest on Smith, killed by a gas explosion at the Theatre Royal, a verdict of accidental death was returned; the jury adding that the blame entirely rested with deceased, who had carelessly used a light. Queensland. It is understood that the Eastern Australian Mail Company has offered to run a 10knot mail service through the Torres Straits, making Brisbane’the terminus, for £50,000. The offer will probably be declined. Adelaide, June 23. Great revival demonstrations take place at Moonta. It has been resolved to appoint a commission to consider the best means of promoting agricultural and technical education. An agitation is on foot for a sliding import duty on flour. The total export of pearl shell during last season amounted to 300 tons. The Gothenburg relief fund has reached over £9OOO. INTERPROYINCIAL. Auckland, July 2. Lena, the late mate of the Albion whaler fell over the cutter Rob-roy, and was drowned. Wellington, July 2. The following cable telegram received by the Sydney Government has been transmitted per the Hero to the New Zealand Government:—“London, June 25. The mail contract is signed. The contractors, the American Pacific company, Mr John Elder of Glasgow, and Mr MacGregor of Leith, jointly and severa ly. The service is B under the printed conditions sent you. The term for eight years; each colony paying half; the speed is 11 knots; the subsidy is £89,950. The service begins in November next from Sydney and Port Chalmers, and continues thence every four weeks. The boats to San ' Francisco sail through from Port Chalmers, and the boats from San Francisco through to Sydney, connecting at Fiji. The boat from Sydney to Fiji meets the boat from ,_San Francisco, and carries the mails to New Zealand porta, this boat being the next through boat from Port Chalmers to San Francisco, returning thence to Sydney, and so on. Mr Elder supplies two new ships, and the American company three new ships, all upwards of 2800 tons, iron screws of great power. There is no doubt of the ability of the contractors. The contract forwarded by the outgoing mail requires confirmation during the present session of Parliament. Send the Now Zealand Government a copy of the printed conditions, bond, and contract, and this telegram. The agreement is signed by Messrs Yogel and Cowper, and awaits the seal of the colony to complete it. Cowper, Russell.” The Customs revenue of Wellington duiing June, 1875, was £9917; the returns for last quarter were £.38,045, The total Customs revenue of the port for the financial year was £137,704. Wellington, July 3. The following candidates have passed the civil service examination in the order in which their names appear : —George Gordon, T. W/Ambrore, W. G. Cotterill, and William Widowson, all of Christchurch. Picton, July 2, The Supreme Court sittings closed to-day. Michael Higgins, for attempted escape from gaol, was sentenced to four years. Barleyman v Redwood, a civil case ; claim £3OO ; damages for non-improvement of land, the verdict was for £142. Walters, on remand for housebreaking, received eighteen months. Timaru, July 2. Arrived—Czarewitch, barque, from Melbourne, with piles for the Pareora bridge. The gale on Wednesday did no damage to the shipping, but swamped the surf boats, with 100 bags of wheat. The ketch Forest Queen, and schooner Cleopatra put to sea. The other craft rode out the gale. The Customs revenue at the port of Timaru for the June quarter, was £6329; and for the corresponding quarter in 1874, £5750.
