ROAD BOARDS.

HEATHCOTE. This Board held its usual meeting on Thursday evening last. Present—Messrs Wm. Mardon (chairman pro. tem .), Ness, and Attwood. The clerk reported having received from Government the first instalment of grant of £510; ordinary road rates, £BS 2s; Waimakariri, £7 6s 6d; total, £602 8s 6d; making the overdraft at the bank, after payment of £57 18s Bd, being the paysheets passed at the meeting, £295 11s Id. Messrs Burberry and Leigh waited on the Board re formation of streets on section 79 at Waltham, and were informed that the foreman’s estimate for forming same was 35s per chain, equal to 17s 6d per chain frontage, and that the Board would undertake the work, provided the necessary amount, viz, £264, was voluntarily subscribed and paid to the Board within a month, and Mr J. W. Leigh be authorised to collect same, and that advertisements to this efEect be inserted in the papers. The deputation appointed to meet a deputation from the Avon Road Board to inspect Stanmors bridge reported that the bridge was in a bad state and wanted repairing immediately, It was decided that this Board should carry out the necessary repairs. The foreman was then instructed to get on with the work as soon as he could get suitable timber for same. The necessity of proceeding with the construction of the new bridge at New Brighton was discussed, when it was resolved to request the Avon Road Board to undertake and proceed with the work with as little delay as possible. It was resolved that the Government be written to, asking them to supply the Board with plans and specifications for the continuation of improvements to the Sumner road, as the Board was anxious to have the same completed before the summer traffic set in. Letters from the following persons were read : —From the Secretary of Public Works, in reply, re culvert near the mouth of the Tunnel on Hills road, saying the matter was being seen to; also informing the Board that the sum of £2040 had been allottted to the Board, and that the first instalment of £5lO had been Letter to be acknowledged with thanks. From Mr E. Pepper, asking leave to remove fence and gorse from Hargood’s lane. Granted, subject to the foreman’s approval. From Mr P. Ball re obstruction to creek at Sumner; also, letter from Mr Graham complaining of Mr Ball interfering with him in carrying out his contract with the Board. It was resolved that Mr Ball’s complaint could not be entertained as Mr Graham was only legally carrying out his contract with the Board in reference to drainage : and further, if Mr Ball persists in interfering in the matter he does so at his own risk. From Mr Palairet corapaining of the bad state of the road leading to his house. To oe attended to in due conrse. From Mr Rosser, asking the Board to reconsider the £6O deducted from the amount of his contract for being three weeks and three days over the then already granted extension of time allowed him for finishing his contract of filling up the Ferry road drain, to be informed the Board only fined him for two weeks, and that it sees no reason to alter the decision arrived at. Petition from E. George and five others, asking to have ditches cleaned out. To be attended to in due course, also that Mr Hawley be written to in reference to same, requesting him to clear gorse from said ditches. The clerk was directed to advertise for tenders for assessing the district. The Board then adjourned to that day fortnight, at 6.30 p.m.
