The s.is. Phoebe, Captain Worsp, arrived at this port at 10.40 a.m. on Saturday, aud was berthed at No 2 wharf. She left Dunedin at 2 p.m. on Friday, and experienced light winds during the passage. She brought 83 tons of cargo for this port, and sailed for North at 10 a.m. yesterday (Sunday). Mr Barbor obliged us with files and report. The barque Mystery will finish discharging today. With reference to a paragraph as to the delay In unloading the vessel, fn Saturday’s issue, it appears that the captain has been discharging entirely with his own crew, and he was delayed some little time by putting out 300 sacks salt for Miles and Co, to go by the s.s. Bruce, as it necessitated shitting the cargo. The barque Is turning out her cargo in fine order. The War Office in England has been engaged in making some experiments for the Trinity Board as to the oest form of gun for signalling in fog. In the course of the experiments it was found that the explosion of gun-cotton produces a louder sound than gunpowder, and consequently, further trials are now to be made with gun-cotton in reference to its manipulation and effect. The following suggestions have been made for “fog-signals by vessels under weigh,” viz:—One blast of the whistle—l am porting; two blasts—starboarding; three blasts—alarm; and four blasts—going astern. This would ot course be only applicable to steamers. Another hulk drill soon be added to existing harbor appliances. At present she Is the brig Alarm, recently purchased at Newcastle, on behalf of the Harbor Company, by Captain Hodge, late of the Woodville. He is going to run her with a cargo of coal to Lyttelton, and then will bring her round here. She is described as a handy vessel, suitable for mooring about the harbor.—Otago *• Times.” An Intimation has been received at Lloyd’s, dated Nantes, the 27th March, 4.30 p.m., of the wreck of a large vessel, it is supposed of 3000 tons. A new boat and several bales of cotton had been washed ashore in Donarnenez Bay. Nothing had come ashore to show the nationality of the vessel, except a small piece of brass with “Glasgow” engraved upon it. All hands were supposed to be lost.
