ARRIVAL OF THE OTAGO AT THE BLUFF. The Bluff, June 22. The Otago left Melbourne at 2.30 p.m. on the 17th, and arrived at the Bluff at 12.30 p.m. on the 22nd. She brings 230 tons of cargo, twenty-seven saloon and twenty steerage passengers, for all ports. She sails for Dunedin at 6 p.m. She brings 58 tons of cargo and a few passengers for Lyttelton. [neuter's special telegrams], London, June 10. The Sultan of Zanzibar has arrived in London. London, June 12. Lord Carnarvon, in replying to Earl Shaftesbury in the House of Lords respecting the colony of Fiji, stated that the Government had telegraphed to the local authorities to spare neither exertion or expense. He expressed the greatest confidence in their ability'- and zeal, and remarked that the Home Government was almost powerless in the event of any sudden emergency. The Privy Council has reversed the decision of the Supreme Court at Sydney in the case of Brayzer v McLean. The wheat market is flat, Australian being a shilling lower. Money is easy. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, June 17. The Parliamentary proceedings are characterised by their dullness. The Land Bill formed the subject of debate in the Assembly during the past week, but it excited no interest either inside or outside the House. A point of order raised, that the Bill should have originated in committee, as it dealt with taxation in raising the pastoral assessment, was overruled. In anticipation of the Customs duties changes, there has been a great falling off in the quantities of goods cleared, but when it was announced that the remissions of duty will not come into operation for some months after the passing of the Bill, business revived. Michael Dawson’s property has been sworn at £337,000. At Vaughan, near Castlemain, a Chinaman was murdered in a hut by his mate, another Chinaman, who was arrested. Duncan Longden, Justice of the Peace, has been committed for trial on a second charge of forgery. Mining matters are improving in some parts of the colony. The Rev Charles Clark continues to draw immense audiences. Messrs McEwen, wholesale grocers, have suspended payment, with a deficiency believed to be about £38,000. The handicap for the Melbourne Cup is published. The top weight is 9st 81b ; Lurline comes next with 9st 71b, Calumny has Bst 121 b, and Castaway 7st 131 b. In the Metropolitan Stakes, at Sydney, Lurline is also second top weight with 9st 61b, and Calumny has Bst 81b. Sydney, The Government have sent a telegram to England closing a contract for the New Zea land cable. Wearne’s liabilities are £75,000 ; C. J. Hoyt has failed for £16,000 ; Kumack, merchant, for £17,000 ; Church and Hills, wine and spirit merchants, for £20,000. These failures have paralysed the markets. Signor Pompei. of the Opera Company, has filed his schedule, with liabilities of £6OO. The barque Glenede, from Rockhampton to Sydney, passed a barque on Bunker’s Reef. Her masts were all gone. The Somerset arrived at Singapore on Friday, one day in advance of her contract time. The Commissioner of Lands in Fiji has invited the holders of land and others having an interest in land to forward particulars in order to test the validity or otherwise of their titles. Adelaide. The New Government has enunciated a vigorous policy, which includes borrowing two millions for railway and harbor works, and an expenditure of £IOO,OOO on immigration, If taxation is necessary it will be direct, but the tariff will be altered of the past year in the direction of free trade, A motion for the payment of members was negatived. The ministeral policy is generally approved. Tasmania. The agricultural returns show a surplus for export of 447,000 bushels of wheat. The average crop of wheat is 18J bushels to the acre. The increase in the yield of wheat is 119,000 bushels. Oats gave a return of 316,000 bushels. Newcastle. Sailed—June 12th, Mary Blair, for Lyttelton.
INTERPROVINCIAL.
Napier, June 21. Mr Ormond was re-elected for Hastings unopposed. Heavy rains on Saturday flooded the Meanee flats and the low-lying part of the town, and many sheep were drowned. A serious case of stabbing occurred on Saturday evening. James Cable, bricklayer, was stabbed with a knife by John Thomas, a cab-driver, who inflicted a dangerous wound five inches long in the stomach. He was brought before the Resident Magistrate today, and remanded, Thomas was being employed as overseer of the road, and discharged by Cable, under whom he was working. The former resented it. Cable may recover, but is not out of danger. A letter from Dr Spencer on the cause of the late epidemic here, points out that the immigrants per Clarence were landed here in every stage of disease (typhoid), and landed in the barracks. Blenheim, June 21. At the Wairau election Mr Ward polled at Blenheim 116, and at Marlborough town 26, at Ren wick 36. Mr Moorhouse at Blenheim 125, at Marlborough town 41, at Renwick 7. Majority for Mr Ward at these three places 5. There still remain to come in the returns from the Wairau Valley and Flaxbourne. The election has been most keenly contested. There was some excitement towards the close, and heavy odds were laid on Mr Ward. Blenheim, June 22. For the Wairau election all the returns are now in ; they give Mr Ward a majority of twenty-five. Nelson, June 22. The Governor and bis suite sailed in the Luna at noon. She will anchor during the night in the French Pass.
