ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHUOTE. This Board met on Thursday last, at 6.30 p.m. Present ; Messrs Dunlop, Attwood, Mardon, and Ness, Mr Ness acting as chairman pro tem. The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, the foreman reported on the Hills road, by Messrs Austin and Kirk’s potteries, and it was decided that in the Board’s present financial position it would be impolitic to make the road now, notwithstanding their liberal offer to find all drainpipes and pay £2O as subscription towards the same. The clerk to write to the Avon Koad Board re Stanmore bridge, asking it to appoint a time for a deputation from the two Boards to meet to see what repairs were necessary to be made to the same. Also, to write to the Government respecting the bridge on the Hills road, near the tunnel month, originally built by the railway contractors in connection with the railway works, but immediately after completion was washed away and then replaced by a temporary one, which is now quite decayed, and to urge upon the Government the necessity of having it attended to by putting in a permanent culvert without delay to prevent accident. Messrs Leigh and Burberry waited on the Board with a petition from the owners and occupiers of part Of rural section No 79, at Waltham, asking the Board to strike a rate for the purpose of making the roads. Deferred to next meeting. Messrs Radcliff and Berry attended, asking the Board to repair Dyer’s road. It was s.greed the same be attended to. Also Messrs Dryden and Malcolm were ia attendance respecting St John’s road, which is in a bad state Letters from the following persons were received: —MrL. Lee, Mr Lockhart, and Mr Wright, asking that the River Avon road might be attended to Agreed to. From Mr Gofton, asking permission to cut down trees on the River Avon road. Agreed to, subject to the foreman’s supervision. From Mr Virtue, asking for a footpath on the Ferry road, from St John’s to Haigood’s roads, on condition that the half cost ia subscribed. The clerk to answer same, giving an estimate of cost. Letters from Mr Huddleston, Mr Perkins, and Mr W. Smith, complaining of the bad state of the Heathcote Valley road. Resolved, that the same be attended to in due course. From Mr Morgan, asking for a little gravel, for a path leading to his residence. The Board could not grant the request, as it was through private property. From Mr Berry, respecting the water in Jackson’s Creek; Letter to be acknowledged. From the Avon Road Board re Stanmore bridge. Agreed to. A petition from ratepayers on the river road between Mr Cowlishaw’s and Mr Hitchens’ corner was received, asking that, that portion of road might be shingled. Resolved that it be put off for a time, as there were no funds to do it with. Also a requisition from ratepayers on Ensor’s road, complaining of the bad state of same, and asking for improvement. To be acknowledged, and the same answer given as to the last petition. Letters from Messrs Wicks and Whittington, also from Farlnnd and Son, and from Mr Ingram, offering to supply the Board with stone and timber. To be acknowledged, stating the offers will be considered. From Mr Bishop, secretary to the Gasworks Company, complaining of damage being dote to the Gasworks during the last great rain, by its being flooded. The clerk was directed to reply stating that the Board could not have given relief in such an emergency, situated as the works are, and that the members will further consider the letter, and do what they possibly can in the matter. From the Provincial Engineer re Mr Leatham’s contract, for improvements on the Sumner road, certifying to the comp etion of the work, with the exception of a few yards of stone, and his keeping the road in repair for three months ; also bearing reference to the manner Mr Leatham kept the road open for traffic under difficulties during the progress of the work. The clerk was directed to give notice to all persons whose trees were overhanging the roads, to cut same. The foreman to remove the artesian well on the footpath on Matheson’s road, as the same is dangerous. The clerk’s receipts for the fortnight were £331 5s Id, and accounts to the amount of £636 2s were passed for payment, which would make the overdraft at the bank £BBS. The Board then adjourned to that day fortnight at the same hour.
