AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
A special meeting of the committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Saturday, at the offices of the secretary. Present—Messrs H. P. MurrayAynsley (in the chair), S. Garforth, Henderson, R. Wilkin, Fantham, Bruce, Alport, Mann, Washbourn, Ferguson, Anderson, jun, and Freestone,
The chairman said that the meeting had been convened to consider the dates on which the November annual show of the Association should be held. The C.J.O.were anxious that the dates fixed for it should not clash with those of the Metropolitan Race meeting. It was therefore for the meeting to say what days they should hold their show. He desired to point out that for some years the Association had held their show on the Prince of Wales’ birthday (November 9th), and that of course they could not be asked to give up ' that day, but the first day . might be so arranged so as to avoid what occurred last year, when their first day was one of the race days. He might also take this opportunity of saying that it was owing to circumstances over which he had no control that he was absent from the last special meeting. [Hear, heir.] Mr R. Wilkin felt sure from the great interest always evinced by Mr Aynsley in the work of the association, that the committee would acquit him of having intentionally absented himself from the meeting. [Hear, hear.] Some discussion ensued as to the fixing of the dates of the show, the members present expressing themselves in favor as far as possible, of meeting the wishes of the Jockey Club in the matter.
The chairman thought that it would not be advisable to give up the Prince of Wales’ Birthday, as that being a general holiday, some other public body would be sure to take this day up. Mr Wilkin also spoke in favor of retaining the 9th November as one of their show days. After some further discussion, Mr Wilkin moved—” That the show be held on November Bth and 9th.”
Mr Alport seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Mr Freestone was instructed to forward a letter to the C.J.C., informing them of the decision arrived at by the committee. Mr Henderson said, as the ploughing match season was now commencing, he thought it would be as well that the association should offer a cup or money to be competed. The province might be divided into districts, and the prize awarded to the best ploughman out of the various districts. Several members spoke in favor of the proposition as one tending to give farmers an interest in the association.
The chairman pointed out that this being a special meeting called for a particular purpose, they could net pass any resolution on the subject. If Mr Henderson thought proper, however, he might give notice of motion, and have the matter considered at some future meeting. After some further discussion the matter dropped, it being understood that it would be brought on at a future time. The meeting then adjourned.
