DRAINAGE.

To the Editor of the Globe. Sir, —It seems strange that the Corporation has no power to compel people who run filth from their houses into the surface drains to cleanse these places with pure water. If the artesians were run into them they would be cleansed, and much evil averted. Such a drain as referred to occurs at the extreme north end of Durham street, and it is a constant annoyance to the passers by. The stench arising from it is most fearful. A little lower down this street there is one of these drains running over the footpath; but as this soon mixes with the artesian the evil is not so bad, though it is rather unsightly. If the sanitary inspectors were a little more •vigilant much of the sickness now prevalent might have been prevented. Yours, &c, CITIZEN.
