A charge of forgery is being investigated against Duncan Longeren, formerly an officer of dragoons, and a member of the Assembly. A Chinaman has been committed for the manslaughter of a child, which he killed by a blow aimed at the mother. Resolutions have been passed in the Sydney Assembly in favor of subsidising the proposed New Zealand cable. There have been further failures, including Sames and Humack, and Benjaman Cocks, a boot and shoe dealer, with liabilities amounting to £9OOO. The overland telegraph line has been interrupted for the last two days, A cargo of New Zealand oats, ex Mary Bannatyne, sold for feed at 4s Id per bushel. SHIPPING. Melbourne. By Mr Barns’ cable resolution in the Sydney Assembly, it is asked to assent to a subsidy of £7,500 per annum for ten years, two-thirds to be paid by New Zealand, and one-third by New South Wales. The minimum message of ten words to cost 7s 6d. The cable to be laid within twelve months, and a company are prepared to accept a contract on these terms. The blacks have attacked some Chinese on the Palmer river, and robbed their tents. They speared one Chinaman, and subsequently ate him. 650 Chinese landed at Cooktown from Hong Kong during the last few days. INTERPRO YIN CIAL. Wellington, June 17. It is understood that among the measures to be brought before next session of Parliament is one for the amendment of the bankruptcy law, and that Mr Bowen has devoted great care to the framing of the Bill. A well attended meeting of early settlers was held this afternoon, at which a resolution was unanimously carried to the effect that the pioneer settlers and members of their families who arrived prior to June, 1848, are entitled to free grants of land, and that Parliament be moved in the matter:
Captain Rohan does not accept the adjutancy of the Dunedin Volunteers, but will remain sub-inspector of A.C. stationed in the Province of Taranaki. Wellington, June 18. Arrived—Taranaki and Oreti from Lyttelton. A proclamation in the Government Gazette repeals all former rules for the remission of sentences of prisoners in New Zealand prisons. According to the new rules, (prisoners earn a remission by attaining a certain number of marks, as the result of their industry, good conduct being sine qua non, though not counting in the way of actual marks. Blenheim, June 17. The Wairau election nomination took place to-day. Only Messrs J. Ward and Moorhouse were nominated. The show of hands was as follows: —Ward, 57; Moorhouse, 83. A poll was demanded for Mr Ward by himself, which will take place on Monday. Hokitika, June 18. The Alhambi’a arrived at Hokitika this morning. At the sale yards beef averaged 37s Gd to 40s per ICOlb, and was in good demand; sheep, half-bred, 225, The schooner Mary Campbell has not yet been got off the beach. Messrs Woodward, Pearce, and Terrie, on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and Messrs Bunny and Hunter, as representing the Provincial Government will form a local committee for the Philadelphia Exhibition. An attempt to invalidate the city water rate failed in the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning. The New Zealand Times urges the abolition of the publication of Hansard and subsidising it to publish daily condensed reports supplied by the Government.
