Mrs Bladen Neill has rented a mulberry plantation at Vermont for the development of Australian silk worms ; up to the present time the grain is doing well, having passed the second stage. The strike of the colliers of south Wales has terminated, the men consenting to receive reduced wages of 12 J per cent. The wool sales are proceeding briskly, and prices are firm. The Howrah arrived from New Zealand, which she left in February, the Echo and Auckland, which left on February 24th, all arrivedkm May 30th. The steamer Normanby, via Torres Straits left Singapore two days before the contract time. The Dowlas and Aberdare Iron Company havs suspended payment, which involves not only minor failures but a large firm of discount brokers. June 2.In the House of Lords Earl Derby, Minister for Foreign Affairs, in reply to an inquiry from Lord John Bussell, stated that Germany had recently declared she might be forced to strike the first blow in another war in consequence of the extensive armaments which the French nation were organising. Earl Derby further stated that through the intervention of England and Russia the danger of another outbreak of war has been averted. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, June 5. The negotiations for a Pacific mail service on a permanent basis are being continued between New South Wales and New Zealand, and Sir Daniel Cooper and Thomas Russell have arrived at an understanding with the New South Wales Government as to the services for which tenders are to be called, and in respect of the amount each colony is to contribute. Nothing has come of the previous attempt to obtain a contract for which tenders were invited up to sth of May. In anticipation of the New Sonth Wales Government concurring in their deliberations respecting the services required, and the conditions to be attached, Sir Daniel and Mr Russell have advertised in London for fresh tenders to be forwarded up to Ist June in terms of the agreement made between them. The Government are inviting local tenders to be sent in, on or before the 10th of June. It is understood that no time for tendering in England will either be extended to that date, or the tenders will not be opened till the Australian tenders can be telegraphed to London. The Robinson Ministry are devoting attention to public works of a reproductive character. Commercial affairs have received a temporary disturbance by the failure of four mercantile firms concerned in some joint mining speculations. Matters have since assumed their usual aspect owing to the general soundness of trade. The opening of the Queensland Exhibition is fixed for July Bth. The exhibits will subsequently be forwarded to Philadelphia. Heavy gold was struck yesterday in the Prince of Wales’ claim at Carcoar; a ton of stone brought up was estimated to yield 500 ozs of gold. The stone in the shaft looks even richer. Daniel McQuane, the well-known shipbuilder of Sydney and Newcastle, has been sentenced to three months imprisonment for attempting to destroy a vessel, thereby endangering the life of George Mason, a clerk in the Bank of New South Wales, who was in possession of McQuane’s steam yacht, which was mortgaged to the bank. The defendant told the engineer to turn full speed ahead, and jump ashore, and then cast her adrift, leaving no one aboard but Mason, who knew nothing about machinery, and was in great danger until rescued by the engineer of one of the steamers lying at anchor in the harbour. George Budge, foreman to McQuane, who also assisted in the offence, was similarly punished. Victoria. The new Juries Bill, just introduced, abolishes the present qualifications, and substitutes the rate-paying qualification. Persons who cannot read and write are disqualified. In the action Lockhart v the Royal Insurance Company, to recover £2( 00 on an insurance policy, the jury found that the plaintiff set fire to the goods on the premises. The Judge ordered him to be tried for arson. Applications have been received for 10,000 shares in Sargood’s Clothing Company. Later Cape papers state that the aspect of affairs is more pacific. The adjourned inquest on Jas Sainsbury, late shipping clerk, showed that death was accelerated by the want of the necessaries of life. His family was found in a state of utter destitution,

At 5.10 p.m. there was no smn of the Macgregor from Sydney to take the outward mail. She is now nearly three days overdue. The medical analysis of the contents of the stomach of Sextie, shewed clearly the presence of a large quantity of strychnine. Auckland, June 14. The JMacgregor has arrived after a pro-tra-pt6d passage of eight and a half days. For three days she experienced very severe gales; on the 11th there occurred a heavy gale, with rain, lightning, and a tremendous sea. The engines were going dead slow. She shipped a heavy sea, which washed the sheep pens and hen coops overboard, but did no other damage. Nelson, June 12. The Governor arrived at one o’clock, and landed in a boat manned by the naval brigade. He was met on landing by the Superintendent, the Executive, and members of the Colonial and Provincial Legislatures, the bishop and clergy, and escorted to town by a large procession of volunteers, the Fire Brigade, and the public. The ketch William and Mary has foundered between Wellington and Foxton during the late gale, and four of the crew perished. There was a great row of a novel character in Queen street to-day. Mrs Vinaro recently from gaol succumbed to her old weakness, and smashed a lot of glass and attacked the barman of the Cosmopolitan Hotel. A fight for about ten minutes followed before a policeman arrived. She then attacked the policeman, and two constables were required to drag her to the station house. 330 tons of Wallsend coal were sold by auction to-day, and realised 37s per ton. The coroner’s jury, at the inquest on Mr Sextie, commission agent, brought in a verdict of death by poison, “ but by whom administered there is no evidence to show. ” The object of this latter clause was evidently to avoid the consequences of a verdict of felo de se, as the evidence clearly showed that the poison must have been taken by Sextie while in a sound state of mind. The coroner objected to the verdict as casting suspicion on others, but the jury insisted, and stated that they desired it to be taken purely as an open verdict.
