(Press Telegraph Agency .) Auckland, June 10. Alluding to the stoppage of £32,000 capitation grant due to province by the General Government to pay interest on constructed railways, the Cross says: “The Provincial Treasurer has communicated with the General Government, and showed that as the line to Mercer had been opened only some twelve days when the announcement of the stoppage was made, it was impossible that the amount of interest accruing in that period could reach such a sum as that due to the province for capitation, To Mr Wood’s memorandum a reply was sent that the interest charged against the province had been steadily accumulating there since the opening of the Onehunga branch in the early part of 1874, Yet during all the time that has since lapsed not one word was said of the intention to make this charge. For nearly eighteen months silence was preserved, and the capitation money regularly paid. The General Government are totally jvrong whichever side they take. The Provincial Treasurer and Council were misled by the laches of the General Government. The Provincial Treasury has been suddenly brought up by the round turn, and have good grounds of grievance against the General Government, which must not now be permitted to leave the province in a financial lurch, as it was unexpected.” Sales : Flour, £l2 10s ; bran, £6 ; pollard, £7 10s ; maize, £7 10s ; oatmeal, £l9 ; pearl barley, £26 ; oats, 3s 6d ; barley, 6s ; maize, os 9d ; hops, 2s ; southern malt, 8s ; potatoes, £4 10s j cheese, lOJd; butter, la 6d; hams, Is.

The Chamber of Commerce decided last night to decline to be represented at a conference of delegates from the various Chambers of Commerce in the Australian colonies, as suggested by the Brisbane Chamber. The Chamber also discussed the question of harbour and port dues, and a committee was appointed to obtain information as to the charges in other ports, and to bring those matters, and increased wharf accommodation under the notice of the proper authorities. The chairman, in the course of his remarks, characterised the charges of the port as disgraceful. Captain Mclntyre said they might well be reduced one-half. Another member described the wharf accommodation as absurdly insufficient. Port Chalmers, June 11. A man named Padon, a solicitor on the New Zealand roll, recently from Christchurch, was again before the Police Court to-day charged with habitual drunkenness. He said if the Court released him he would go to Wellington, where he might have a chance of employment. The Bench gave him another chance. Olson, of Tomato sauce celebrity, has gone to Australia. He was an exceedingly unfortunate man, and was the victim of two fires, which consumed a large number of bottles of sauce, but left poor Olson with several thousand pounds of the insurance companies’ money. He commenced six years ago without any means, and is reported to have taken away £7OOO. Fortunately the receipt for his excellent sauce was purchased by Richard Garlick and Co, who will carry on the manufacture, so that shareholders in the insurance companies of epicurean tastes will get some goood for their money.
