BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Monday, June 7. The weekly meeting of the Board of Education was held at 7 p.m. Present —Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), A. Duncau. T. W. Maude, W. Montgomery, H. R. Webb, A. C. Knight, and J. N. Tosswill. WEST CHRISTCHURCH. A. letter was read from the secretary of the district committee, enclosing a letter from the head master of the Durham street school, as to the means to be adopted for warming the school. Messrs D. Craig, J. G. Hawkes, and W. Harris attended as a deputation from the committee, and stated that the cost of fixing the necessary apparatus for heating the rooms, viz, by an American stove and pipiDg, would be £25, and the cost of extra insurance about £5, so that the total cost would be £3O. If means were not taken to heat the room, very few children would attend ; indeed, the attendance had greatly lessened since the cold weather set in. The deputation drew attention to the necessity of gravelling the grounds about the Lincoln road school, as they were in such a state that the children could not walk about, and the attendance at the school was greatly lessened. The committee would be contented at present with two footpaths and some gravel at the back. The deputation further stated that the lead had been blown from a portion of the roof of the Lincoln road school by the gale on Saturday, and the committee were of opinion that it would cost £SO to repair it. The deputation further requested to allow a small salary to Mr M'Nie as secretary. With regard to the unauthorised expenditure for fittings and furniture for the committee room, the deputation stated that the Hon Mr Bowen, the late chairman of the Board of Education, was perfectly cognisant of the expenditure. The Board decided to sanction the erection of the American stove as suggested by thecommittee in the Durham street schoolroom ; also the laying down of a gravel footpath at the Lincoln Road School. With regard to the damage to the roof of the Lincoln Road school, the chairman was requested to communicate with the Government as to the appointment of an architect to examine and report upon the building. The Board also decided to sanction the payment of £ls a year to the secretary to the committee, and further to sanction the amount of unauthorised expenditure. ASHBURTON. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, containing particulars of the tenders received for school furniture, and recommending the acceptance of the tender of Mr T. Gates, sen. The Board sanctioned the acceptance of Mr Gates' tender. MR E. RAYNER. A letter was read from the Board of Examiners, with reference to Mr E. Rayner's application for higher classification as a teacher, and recommending that, in consideration of additional evidence of Mr Rayner's ability as a teacher, and because by lapse of time an advance of one grade will soon be due, the Board of Examiners recommend that he be promoted from the 3rd division of the 2nd class to the Ist division of the same class. The Board approved. SOUTH RAKAIA. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, asking the Board to sanction the appointment of Mr W. Price, as master, and Miss Price, as sewing mistress, from Ist July next. The Board sanctioned the appointment of Mr Price as schoolmaster, subject to his classification by the Board of Examiners, and also the appointment of Miss Price as sewing mistress, TEMUKA. An application was read from the district committee, asking that Miss Young might be appointed as assistant mistress. The Board decided that Miss Young might be employed as third-year pupil teacher, she being too young to receive the appointment of assistant mistress. lebon's bay.
A letter was read from Mr W. H. Pilliett, enclosing a letter from Mr D. Thompson, of Leßon's Bay, stating that the local committee owed him upwards of £34 for salary. Mr Pilliett stated that there was a strong feeling in the district that the committee should be abolished, and a commissioner be appointed, and he suggested that Mr G. Bishop, of Okain's Bay, should be appointed to the office.
The Board decided that the chairman sign a voucher to pay all money due to Mr Thompson, including house allowance, if any be due. It was also decided to send copies of Messrs Pilliett's and Thompson's letters to the local committee. BUSINESS DONE BY THE CHAJBMAN. The business transacted by the chairman of the Board was approved. The Board then adjourned,
