ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHGOTE
This Board met on Thursday last. Present—Messrs Fisher (chairman), Ness, and Attwood. The clerk’s receipts for the fortnight were—Subscriptions to forming and shingling footpath on the Ferry road from the East belt to Duncan’s road, £3O 5s ; Waimakariri rate, 17s ; ordinary rates, £l6 12s 4d. Balance of Government grant, £2BB. Total, £335 10s 4d. Messrs Austin and Kirk waited on the Board, offering £2O and what drain pipes might be required towards forming and shingling road leading from Colombo street to their pottery and brick works. It was agreed that the foreman report on same at the next meeting. Mr Huddleston waited on the Board with plan of levels for the side channel for draining the south side of the Ferry road, and it was agreed that the work should be commenced as soon as the contract for filling up the drain had been passed, and also that the contractor be written to informing him that the £5 per day penalty for not having the contract finished would be strictly enforced, as he was obstructing the drainage on that side of the road being carried out. That the clerk write to the City Council for cheque towards filling up the drain. Messrs Dempsey and Woodard waited on the Board, re footpath and paying the subscriptions collected, being the half cost for forming same, and were promised that the work would be commenced as soon as possible. The foreman was directed to put a few loads of gravel on the end of Worcester street. The following correspondence was read : From Mr E. O. J. Stevens, re purchase of land at corner of Ward’s Brewery, for the purpose of making the road wider at that point. The Board thought it advisable to decline the offer. From Mr J. A. Graham, stating that Mr Ball had been interfering with his, Graham’s, contract for keeping the Hill’s road, at Sumner, in repair, by cutting an opening in the creek and letting the water through the wrong course. The clerk was directed k> give him notice that the Board will hold him responsible for damage done, and to request him not to interfere with Mr Graham’s contract with the Board. From Mr F. Turvey, asking for road scrapings, The foreman to attend to him. Requisition from Messrs W. J. Olliver and others, urging the necessity for shingling the newly formed Avon river road. To be informed the Board will consider the matter. Letter from the City Council, re scheme for drainage of suburbs, asking the Board to attend at a meeting of the Council, and others to discuss the matter. Agreed that the members of the Board absent be interviewed in reference to same. From Secretary of Public Works, that the balance of grant 1874-5 had been paid to the Board’s credit; also the removing of gate at Garland’s road on the railway had been referred to the engineer. From the City Council re the drainage of road on the Bast town belt that has just been formed, and also forwarding copy of a report from the works committee on drainage of the Eastern and Southern portion of the city and suburbs ; and stating that the Council had given instructions to the surveyor to take steps to carry the water off for the present so as to remedy the inconvenience complained of, but that the Board was to consider it only a temporary expedient. Accounts to the amount of £163 9s lOd were passed for payment, when the Board adjourned.
