PORT OF LYTTELTON. ARRIVED. June s—Nil. There were no signs of the steamer Albion up to the time of our express leaving. THE S.W. GALE IN LYTTELTON. POSSIBLE LOSS OF FIVE LIVES. Last night, the steward of the barque Syren arrived in Lyttelton, and reported that he had had a narrow escape from drowning It appears that he, with five other men, left Lyttelton about 7 p.m. The gale springing up shortly afterwards, the boat was driven into PolhilFs Bay, and touched the rocks. The steward tried to jump ashore with the painter in his hand but missed his footing and fell into the sea, but the next roll carried him high and dry among the rocks, and after lying for a few minutes partially stunned he ran for the shore. When he came to himself after the shock the boat was not visible. It appears the boat first tried to reach the Syren, but failing endeavored to get aboard the Mystery. The people on board the latter barque threw a rope, but the crew of the boat missed it, and then headed the boat for Gollan’s Bay with the intention of beaching her. There is a -probability that the crew of the boat landed in some bay lower down the harbor. The Magellan Cloud had a narrow escape. The Prince Alfred carried away her jib-boom and there has been great damage done to the watermen’s boats. The gale, which at times was nearly a hurricane, is still raging. The fine iron clipper Rangitikei Is coming here to load.. We extract following from “ Otago Daily Times” Undocking of the ship Rangitikei was accomplished at the top of high water last night. The grand proportions of this ship, and her magnificent build, attracted the attention of many experts whilst she was in dock, and a unanimous opinion in her favor was Hie Kangitikei is one ol the heaviest plated ships that ever came to this port, and is as strong as Iron and iron can make her, She has admirable lines, full and yet good, speed and carrying capacity having been nicely balanced in her design. She has an extraordinary grip forwards, her fore foot almost inclining to the ram like in its projection, and should render her very weatherly. After being undocked, the Rangitikei was moored for the night off the dock head, and will be accommodated ;with a pier berth 10-day,”
