SPRINGS.
The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at their office, Springston, on Tuesday, the Ist of June. Present—Messrs O’Oallaghan (chairman), W. B. Andrews, James Beaumont, and R. Watson. The surveyor read his report as follows financial—The Provincial Government have paid into the Bank of New Zealand to the credit of the Board the sum of £568 10s sterling, being the amount retained from .Road Board grants, 1874. Day work—Boyle and two men have been employed putting handrails to bridges on Carter’s and Day’s roads, and repairing Carter’s road and the approaches to the LI and No 2 and Day’s road bridges, and one man has been employed painting the handrails and clearing drains at Lincoln, and one has been clearing Day’s road drain by Silvester’s, and repairing Collins’ road from Day’s road to Leeston road. Contracts— Messrs Sintott and Co. have completed their contract on Day’s road, and I have passed the work. I have also passd Mr Hubbard’s contract for deepening drain through the corner of his land. Messrs Moorshead and Herrick have cleared their drain for the first time ; but Burns and Co, who havethe majority or the drains to cleanse, have only been a day to two at their work. I have written Burns to proceed with the drain without delay. Smith has also commenced to deepen Sergeant’s drain, but is rather hindered by Burns not cleansing the bottom portion of the drain. Selwyn Bridge—l have to bring under the notice of the Board the dangerous state of the approach to the Selwyn bridge, on account of the railway taking part of the road, thus rendering it very narrow, and the other side, which is not fenced, has a steep bank of from six to seven feet. To make the approach safe, it would be required to be filled up to a level with the bridge, and railed off the distance would be about a chain and a half.” Correspondence was read from Mr W, Davis, complaining of the overflow of water on Gould’s road, and asking the Board to make a ditch to relieve it. Resolved—- “ That the Board cannot make a ditch where asked for, it not being the natural fall ; but will consent to Mr Davis cutting a ditch to take the water along the road.” A petition was received from Messrs J.J. Herrick, J. M'Gowan and others, drawing the attention of the Board to the necessity of deepening Friecker’s drain or Hudson’s. Also, from Mr C. Downham, calling the Board’s attention to drain by his property on Hudson’s road.
