PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

The following is the conclusion of our report from the time of going to press yesterday:— : TIME BALL AT LYTTELTON. In reply to Mr Webb, the Secretaby fob Public Works said that the time ball at Lyttelton could not be erected until the site was decided on. RESERVES. The Provincial Secretary moved—- « That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to make the following reserves : Ten acres (more or less) situate in the Ashburton district"( Mount Somers road district), bounded on the northward by a line "in continuation of the southern boundary of section 5738, on the westward by the road forming the eastern boundary of the same section ; on the south-eastward by a road branching north-easterly towards Alford Forest; and on the southward by a line drawn parallel to the northern boundary, so as to include the required quantity. For a school site.’’ • The motion was agreed to. ( ASHBURTON ROAD DISTRICTS. Sir OIU.CROPT Wilson moved—“ That the portion of the Ashburton road district named in the petition of Charles Reed and thirty•nine others, addressed to his Honor the .Superintendent, and forwarded by his Honor to this Council in message No 8 for consideration, be severed from the Ashburton road •district, and constituted a new road district under the title of the Upper Ashburton district. , The motion was agreed to. lf - CHRISTCHURCH GAS COMPANY. The Secretary for Public Works moved—“ That in the opinion of this Council it is desirable chat effect should be given to the arrangement entered into between the Christchurch Gas Company and the Provincial Government, whereby the Christchurch Gas Company should be allowed to connect a branch line, subject to the direction of the railway engineer, from their works with the railway, upon the following terms :—lst. That the Gas Company shall pay all expenses attendant on the construetion of the branch line and siding, including the preparation of the usual deed by the Provincial Solicitor. 2nd. That the working of the siding jshall be subject to such regulations a«! may hom time to time be adopted by the Government. , 3rd. That the Government, upon giving sik' months’ notice in wilting to the Mid company, may close the

said siding to the Christchurch Gas Company’s works without paying compensation, except for the then value of the rails and sleepers put into the said siding.” The motion was agreed to. RESERVES.

The Secretary for Public Works moved—“ That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to make the following reserves :—IB9B (in red). Five acres situate in the Ashley district (Ashley road district), having frontage of 5 chains to the road forming the north-eastern boundary of section 22123, and extending southwesterly 10 chains in a rectangular block, north-west pf and adjoining the aforesaid section. For a gravel pit. 1899 (in red). Five acres situate in the Ashley district (Ashley road district), having 5 chains frontage to the road forming the south-west boundary of section No 7885, and extending south-westerly 10 chains in a rectangular block. The easternmost corner of the abovedescribed land is situate 6 chains north-west of the angle in the road opposite section 10549. For a gravel pit.” Motion put and passed. BROAD AND NARROW GAUGE. Mr J. B. Brown moved—That a return be laid on the table showing the names and nature of employment of all persons employed in working respectively the broad and narrow gauge lines of railways in the province.” Motion put and passed. WHITE ROCK QUARRIES RAILWAY. Mr Harper moved —“ That a Select Committee be appointed to consider the petition for. a -branch railway to the White Rock quarries, consisting of Messrs Higgins, Maskell, Bluett, Dixon, Potts, and the mover, to report on Wednesday, June 9th.” The motion was agreed to. BANGIORA AND MALVERN RAILWAY. On the motion of Mr J. E. Brown, the House went into committee to consider the following resolution ; —“ That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to place on the supplementary estimates the sum of £2OOO as the one-fourth contribution for the extension of the Rangiora railway towards the Malvern district.” The motion was agreed to, reported, and the report adopted. AKAROA CASUAL WARD. On the motion of Mr Westenba, the House went into committee to consider the following resolution;—“That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to place on the supplementary estimates a sum not exceeding £3OO for a casual ward in the town of Akaroa.” ‘The motion was agreed-to,’ reported, and the report adopted. Notices of motion having been given, the House adjourned until Tuesday, at 3 p.m.
