MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH.
Friday, June 4th.
[Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunk and Disorderly.—Edward Petersen, for drunkenness, was fined ss, and Daniel Rowley, ss. Creating a Disturbance. William Smith, charged with creating a disturbance in the Warwick Hotel, and resisting and striking Constable Gatward after he had been taken into custody, was fined 60s. liXEGALLy on Premises. James Taylor, George Beaton, and William Godhen, were charged with being found illegally in an untenanted house at the corner of St Asaph street and the Lincoln road at an early hour this morning. Mr Makeig agent for the premises said the men had no right to be there. The men stated that they had come in from Tai Tapu, and seeing an empty house, had put their swags into it while they went to look for work. They were going to work thisjmorning if they had not been arrested. As this was their first offence, his Worship dismissed them with a caution.
Larceny.—Charles Andrews was charged with stealing a pair of boots from the shop of Mr R. Murphy, in High street. Detective Lorrigan ([deposed to the arrest of the prisoner, who was very violent when arrested, and had bitten him. Prisoner was running away when he stopped him. Charles Duckworth, grocer, High street, saw the prisoner take the boots from the front of Mr Murphy's shop. He caught hold of him, and his (witness) man came to his assistance. Prisoner resisted, and eventually got away, when his man followed him. Mr Murphy recognised the boots in Court as his. They were valued at 10s 6d. No one had purchased them from him. Sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor.
