A MYSTERY.
A correspondent of the Leader writes : " Hobgoblin or man ? is a question now creating a considerable amount of discussion in this locality. For some days an apparition, having the appearance of a man with a large dog at his heels has been alarming the inhabitants by its nocturnal wanderings. A woman at Newtown, who had a visit paid to her by the mysterious beings, fired three shots at them, which she bV lieves must have passed right through their bodies, but she says that they only tired to a stump close by and menacingly grinned at her. Another party threw an axe at them, which passed through their bodies as it would through the air. The sluice-boxes of the Bute Company were also found to have been scraped with something harder than human nails, and three men were placed during the night to keep watch with powder and lead, for the evil spirits, but they did not come. Whilst two of the men, however, were returning home from their shift at midnight, they saw what appeared to them to be the dreaded spirits approaching, and giving them a wide berth, saw them distinctly fly over a fence and make for the house of a neighbour. They, however, kept at a safe distance, and could not see what became of them afterwards. In the latter instance, however, I may say that the sceptical allege that the apparition was only the proprietor of the house returning home with his dog. At Smythesdale, an old resident found that one of his bedroom windows had been opened during the night, and all the articles in the room tossed about, but nothing taken away, and the children heard the stairs creak as with the foot of a man. Opinion is much divided as to whether it would be the best plan to send for the services of a detective, or for one of the spiritualistic notables from Sandhurst." ..'.
