ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE NEAR BIRMINGHAM.
{From the Times, March 24.)
At Harborne, near Birmingham, on Monday night, a young man named Davis made a desperate and partially successful attempt to cut his sweatheart's throat, and then committed suicide. It appears that Davis, who was engaged at Elliott's metal sheathing works, in the neighbourhood of Harborne, had been for some time past courting Elizabeth Haynes, a domestic servant of the same village. The girl, however, was either indifferent or cocpiettish, and her conduct was the occasion of frequent quarrels between them. On one of these occasions Davis, in a lit of jealous frenzy, had threatened to take his sweetheart's life, but the girl attached little significance to the threat, and permitted his addresses as usual. On Sunday afternoon there was a fresh disagreement between them, in consequence of Haynes refusing to allow her lover to join her at church, and Davia left her in a passion. On the following evening,, shortly after 8 o'clock, the girl was sent out by her mistress on an errand, when she was met and accompanied by Davis. After executing her commission, the girl \p<s {vx-<
duced to walk with her companion through a comparatively secluded byway, known as Moor Pool-lane, where Davis suddenly tun ed upon her with a knife, and holding her firmly against the wall, attt mpted to cut her hroat. Owing to the vigorous resistance of the girl and the thickness of the muffler round her throat, the knife did not penetrate very deeply, and after receiving a few gashes on the neck and hands she managed to liberate herself, and raise an alarm. Thereupon Davis turned the knife upon himself, and before aid could arrive cut his throat in a most determined manner nearly from ear to ear. Death must have been almost instantaneous. The girl's wounds are progressing favorably.
