BISHOP REDWOOD IN PORT.
Bishop Redwood visited port ontanday last, and was met at the 10 a.m. train ly the priest and most of the influential Catiolics. He proceeded to the priest's house, wiere a procession was formed of the childen of the parish and parishioners, who marcied to the church, where the following addrea was presented by Father Francis del Monti:—" We, the pastor and Catholics of Lytteton, beg most respectfully, on the occasion of tiis your first visit, to assure your Lordship of the sentiments of respect and heartfelt which your presence amongst us dicits. These sentiments are twofold—the first proceeding from our desire at all times to evidence our attachment to the Catholic Church by showing our respect to its constituted authority in your Lordship; and the second, from our knowledge of your Lordship's eminent character for learning, combined with piety, which so admirably qualified you, though so young, for the high position in which we now see you, who devotedly approach you. We most sincerely trust your Lordship may have a long and successful career amongst us, that you may have the satisfaction of seeing the rising generation grow up sterling, staunch Catholics, mindful of the religion of their forefathers, always ready to die for their faith, yet always showi ing that beautiful principle of childlike submission to the counsels and instructions of their superiors. " We greet your Lordship with most loving hearts, And beg that He who every grace imparts May guide and bless you in the arduous task, For virtue's sake, from vice to strip the mask. Your Lordship's blessing, then, on us bestow, And take for inward love this outward show; And be assured our love shall never cease Till we, your faithful children, rest in peace; In conclusion, my Lord, allow us to offer to your Lordship our hearty thanks for your visit to us, and we fervently pray that this your pilgrimage to this part of your diocese may be blessed by Almighty God wilh the cuost favorable results to religion, education, and spiritual progress. Humbly soliciting your Lordship's apostolic benediction, we beg to subscribe ourselves your Lordship's most dutiful children in Christ.—Signed by Father Francis and the leading Catholics of Lyttelton." His Lordship celebrated mass, assisted by Fathers Francis and Goodenough, and afterwards preached an eloquent sermon on the Gospel for the day,
