A London paper says that Earl Dudley has recovered possession of the Countess's jewels by paying £BOOO and asking no questions. A meeting of purchasers of land from the Polynesia Company, known as "the fortieths," was held at No 76, Collins street west, says the Argus of a recent date, to consider the desirability of memorialising the Governor of Fiji on his arrival in Melbourne with respect to recognition of their claims. The purchasers paid for parcels of land in Viti Levu Bay and the Island of Bega, supposed to contain 100,000 acres. They are 30,000 acres short, and they claim that this amount should be made up from the Crown lands ol the colony. Mr Septimus Martin occupied the chair.
