CHRISTCHURCH. ' ’ , —Monday, Mav 17. . i [Before G-„ L. : Hellish, Esq., R.M.] Pawnbroker’s License. —A pawnbroker’s license was granted to Mr H. A. Davis. ! Drunkenness. —John King, fined 5s ; defendant waS also fined 10s. for being drunk whilst on bail; John Keeland, fined 5s ; Robert McCafferty, who was also charged with resisting the police, was fined 10s; John Brown, fined 5s ; Janies Sutton, fined ssWilliam Thompson, who was also charged with breaking furniture in the house of Mr Brinkman, where he lodged, was fined ss, and ordered to pay 10s damages., Illegally on Premises. —William Tracey was charged with being illegally in the stable of Mr D. Bartram,' Montreal street. Defendant was found lying half drunk in the stable on Saturday night. Fined 10s, Nicholas Kearney and John Bowman were charged with sleeping in the stables of the Warwick Hotel on ‘ Sunday morning at two o’clock. Mr Simmons, the landlord said that the defendants had no permission to sleep in the stables. Only a short; time since the stables were burnt do\yn through persons sleeping in them. The defendants called him up at two o’clock in the morning for beds, but he could not let them in then. The defendants said that they went into the stable to lay down when they could not get in, although they had money to pay. 'His Worship dismissed the defendants with a caution, and told Mr Simmons that he had no right to refuse them admittance when they wanted lodgings. Mr Simmons said that he saw the defendant Bowman at ten o’clock and refused to lot him have drink, as ho was intoxicated. He knew . nothing of the other defendant. Drunk and Throwing Stones. —Joseph Rich was charged with being drunk and throwing stones in a public place. It appeared that defendant went drunk to the house of Mr H. Faust on Saturday night and threw stones. He was fined 20s. ‘ . LYTTELTON. Saturday, May 15, • i [Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M.J LARCENY. —Thompson Simpson, on remand, was charged with this offence. Henry, Brant, sworn, said—l am a laborer, living , in ! Lyttelton. In the month of March last 1 was employed on the breakwater; the pri-j soner was also employed there; I sent the prisoner by my wife the ticket to draw my fortnight’s wages, amounting to £6 Bs. He did not bring any of the monty to me until the next Monday, when my wife went to prisoner, and he gave her £2. 1 On the Tuesday prisoner said that a man named John M‘Kay had taken the money, from him when he was intoxicated; he said he would go,to the police about it; 1 have never had any transactions with the prisoner before this, and have not received any of the money
since, so there is now £4 8s due to me; I never authorised prisoner to expend any of the money. By the Bench—l never ascertained what became of the money. Caleb Hawkins, sworn, said—l am book-keeper for the firm of Hawkins and Co; I know prosecutor and prisoner; they were both employed at the breakwater in March last; there was £6 8s due to Brant about March 20th, and I paid the amount to the prisoner; Brant afterwards inquired for the money, and I informed him I had handed it to prisoner, Mary Brant, sworn, said —I am Henry Brant’s wife; last March, about the 20th, I asked the prisoner to draw my husband’s pay; he did not bring it to me, and 1 went to him on the Monday, and he gave me £2, and promised to give me the other in the evening; I have not received the balance up to this time. * This concluded the evidence. The Bench said that they would give the prisoner the - benefit of the doubt, and dismiss the case, but he must promise to refund the money to Brant as soon as possible.
Drunkenness.— Jane Rhodes was arrested by Constable M‘Guire for this offence, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.. ‘ / / i ' . . ■ ■
