The barquentine Prince Alfred, and schooners Onward and Mary Melville, are daily expected from the Thames. The ketch Clematis was berthed at the Breastworks yesterday, and commenced to discharge her inward cargo oi timber. The schooner Pacific, Captain Bradshaw, sailed yesterday tor Timaru. The s.s. Tararua, Captain Clark, commenced to discharge her cargo at l p.m. yesterday, and put out seventy-eight tons and took in fifty tons up to 4 p.m. She sails at 1 p.m. to-day. . The s.s. Bruce, Captain Jones, arrived in harbor at 9 a m. yesterday from Dunedin, via intermediate ports. The purser reports that he left Port Chalmers at 9.30 p.m. on May 11th; arrived at Timaru at 7.30 on the 12th; left again at 2,40 p.m. the same day. Experienced light N.E. winds, with thick weather and heavy swell, arriving as above.

The s.s. Tararua, J. W.Clark, commander, arrived in harbor yesterday, at noon, from Melbourne, via South. The purser reports that they cleared Port Philip Heads at 6.30 p.m. on the 3rd instant. Passed Swan Island at 2 a m, on the sth instant. Encountered strong head winds with heavy sea and rain up to sighting the land on the 9th instant. Passed the Solanders at 5.30 a.m. on the 10th instant, and arrived at the Bluff at noon the same day. Left for Port Chalmers at 4.30 p.m., arriving there the following morning, at 9.30. Experienced strong head winds with heavy sea from Bluff. Left Port Chalmers at 3.30 p.m. on the 12th instant. Experienced light N.E. winds and thick weather, arriving as above. On Tuesday night the barque Iris was lying’ofl Officers’ Point, with two anchors out and the chains to the bare end, but in spite of all the north-easter was too strong for her, and she drove up the harbor close to the reef, striking the bottom sharply several times. At 3 a.m. on Wednesday, one of the hawse pipes broke, and the planking below was cut through by the chain cable. Captain Harless went on shore at at daylight, and tried to get a steamer to tow her ofi’, but there was not one available to take her out of her dangerous position. Luckily at noon the wind shifted to the westward, and Captain Galbraith went on board at the request of Captain Harless, and the vessel fwas a safe berth. The Monynick, barque, was also driven up close to the reef, and her captain also applied for a steamer, but none was to be procured. Had the wind not shifted the position of these vessels would have been most perilous, and it shows the absolute need there is for a steamer belonging to the port of sufficient power to tow vessels oft - the rock. II something is not done soon, Lyttelton will get the reputation of being an unsafe harbor. ENGLISH SHIPPING. On March 6th Messrs Murdock and Murray, Port Glasgow, launched from their shipbuilding yard a steam screw hopper barge, named the Sumner. 1 lie barge represents the first part of a contract of dredging plant—dredger and hoppers—for the Provincial Government of Canterbury, New Zealand. After the launch the Sumner was towed to Glasgow to receive her machinery. The tonnage loading on the berth at London, March 12th, for India, China, and the Cape of Good Hope, amounted to 62,404 tons; and for Australia and New Zealand to 60,553 tons. The White Eose, for Canterbury, arrived at Plymouth on February 17th.
