[FROM OUR DUNEDIN CORRESPONDENT.] Dunedin, May 8.
The City Council have thoroughly determined upon the erection of their own gasworks immediately. The only question awaiting settlement is whether they should give the superintendence to Melbourne or local engineers. There was a stormy discussion in the Council to-day over the fees charged by the arbitrators in the cases for widening Princess street. When they were appointed the Council determined the remuneration should in no case exceed £SOO, divisable amongst the five arbitrators. Now the latter claim over £BOO, which the Council are determined to resist. That this decision had been arrived at, at a committee meeting, by some means leaked out, and the principal tenants interested immediately lifted the award and themselves gave a cheque for the fees. The Mayor termed the arbitrators’ action a dishonourable and infamous attempt at extortion. The Councils’ arbitrators are Buch, ex-Mayor, and Hawkins. They shelter themselves on this ground, they had acted before they received this letter of appointment, and therefore were not bound by the latter.
