For the Hurdle Race all were, scratched but Medora and Alice Gray. A good start was effected, Medora making play to the first hurdle, but baulked, Alice clearing it beautifully. Medora was quickly recovered, and came over at the second attempt. Alice baulking at the second hurdle, running into the crowd on the outside. Medora coming up cleared this hurdle, and went on with the .ead, jumping beautifully, but baulked at the sixth and seventh hurdles, allowing Alice, who only refused the second hurdle from home once, to come in alone. For the South Canterbury Handicap, two miles, Castaway, Sonnambula, and Golden Grape started. Golden Grape made the running for three-quarters of a mile, followed by Sonnambula and Castaway, hard held. Here Golden Grape had shot his bolt, and the running was carried on by Sonnambula, Castaway two lengths in her rear. These positions were maintained till half a mile from home, when Castaway came up to her, and the pair raced together for a couple of hundred yards, when Sonnambula fell back beaten and was eased off, leaving Castaway to win as he liked. Time, 4min lsec. For the Tradesmen's Handicap, Mignonette, Sonnambula, Golden Grape, Waverley, and Ivanhoe were scratched, Exile and Nectar, each 9st, only facing the starter. The pair got well away, Exile making the running till entering the straight, when Nectar, assuming the lead, won easily. Betting, 6 toJ4 on Nectar. For the Consolation Handicap, Sonnambula, 9st, Waverley, 7st 61b, Golden Grape, 6st 41b, started, a good start being made. After going a hundred yards the Grape was out of it, and Waverley made the running to the turn for home, when Sonnambula, who had been ridden for some time, got on even terms, the pair racing to the distance post, when Waverley, swerving under the whip, which was most unmercifully administered by Richards, let Sonnambula in an easj winner.
