Bluff, April 27. The Otago left Melbourne on the 22nd, at 3 p.m., and arrived at the Bluff at 5.30 p.m. on the 27th. She brings 41 saloon, 32 steerage, and 320 tons cargo for all ports. She sails for Dunedin to-morrow, at 4 p.m Passengers for Lyttelton—Miss Sand, Mrs Matram, Mrs Williams; ten steerage passengers, 115 tons cargo. She brings no later shipping than brought by the Hero. London, April 19. Another German note, addressed to Belgium, says the present international law is inadequate for mutual protection, and as Germany is remedying the defects, suggests that Belgium should do the same. The Ceylon arrived at Galle from Australia on the 15th.
London, April 20. Earl Derby, replying to Earl Russel, said the German note to Belgium was very friendly. It had been communicated to the several Powers, but England was not formally consulted. There was a large procession of trades through the streets. The larrikin nuisance is being dealt with severely by the magistrates, who are imposing heavy fines. The Wesleyan Chronicle has ceased publication, and a new Wesleyan organ, called the Spectator and Chronicle, the. Rev J. O, Symonds as editor, has started. Welcome rain has fallen over the colony. Sugars are selling well at full rates. There is a scarcity of English malt, which has created a demand for malting barley. INTERPROVINCIAL. AUCKLAND, April 27. Sir George Arney’s house has narrowly escaped destruction by fire. Three outhouses connected with it were destroyed, but tne exertions of the neighbors saved the main building. The skeleton of a man has been found at the Three Kings, near Auckland. The flesh had evidently been eaten by pigs. The man was apparently a homeless old vagrant, and had laid down to die, but his remains were beyond identification, the death having taken place months ago. New Plymouth, April 27. Sailed—Taranaki, for Southern Ports, She has the San Francisco mail on board. Arrived—Wellington, from the South. ' Wanganui, April 27. David Stewart Lyall, late Marton agent of the Bank of New Zealand, pleaded “ Guilty” to seven charges of embezzlement, and was sentenced to six years’ penal servitude. The Judge expressed a hope that before his term expired the law would be more appropriate, John Ireland, for forging and uttering at Palmerston, was sentenced to four years. Wellington, April 27. It is understood that Parliament will positively meet in July. All the new Bills to be introduced are in a very forward state, so that no delay whatever is likely to be occasioned through Mr Vogel’s absence.
With reference to the article in the Southern Cross of this morning re the four million loan, the real facts of the case are understood to be as follows:—The loan was placed in the market at 93, but the expenses incidental to the negotiation and floating will amount to about 2 per cent, leaving the net amount at which the loan has • been floated at 91, or equal to a five per cent loan. Dunedin, April 27. The police, with the aid of two revenue officers, are making a raid on sly grog sellers; but owing to the technical objections raised by counsel for the defence, there is great difficulty in obtaining a conviction. Out of a number of cases during the week only two convictions were obtained. Mr G. E. Barton, counsel for the defence, told the inspector of police that if the Government did as elsewhere, and employed a barrister for the prosecution, they would get more convictions. Private advices received here state that the Easby made a passage from Wellington to Sydney in five days. The Provincial Council has requested the members of the Dunedin club to vacate Fern*
