CANTERBURY AUTUMN MEETING.

Friday, April 23, 1875. Stewards —Messrs G. B, Parker, J. Brabazon, M. Studholme, H. P. Lance, E. L. Clogstoun, Hon. E. W. Stafford, F. W. Delamain. Judge—Sir J. C. Wilson, C.B. K.S.I. Starter —Mr P. Campbell. Clerk of the Coursd—Mr E. W. Millett. Handicapper— Mr H. P, Lance. Clerk of the Scales—Mr R, Hustler. - The weather this, morning promised well for a race day, though it was decidedly close, and many of the weatherwise prophecied rain before night. The railway officials had at last been persuaded to issue similar tickets to those used at the Club’s last meeting, and consequently the rail was well patronised. His Excellency the Governor and his suite were present during the day’s racing, and the Marquis of Normanby appeared to take considerable interest in the sport. The betting last night indicated that Templeton was firmly established as first favorite for the big race of the meeting, his backers being very confident that he would carry his big weight to victory. On arriving at the course the weather commenced to look more threatening, and a Sou’-wester seemed imminent, fortunately, however, it held off throughout the day. Bookmakers had but very short prices to lay about anything in the Trial'Stakes, and there was not much money speculated by the general public in the race. ' vi . (Wintsringham) 0 Even money agst Somnambula, 6 to 4 agst King Philip; and 2 to I agst the others. , King Philip looked ragged enough and very little improved, but Somnambula was looking well. Rory O’More had but few admirers, but there were some who pinned their faith on Hercules, and events proved that they were not far out. ITT’ Ij. The flhg fell to a very good start, Princess Mary, going to the front at ,once with the others all close up,. being second, and Rory O’More third, Hercules lying last. They ran "in this order for about a quarter of a mile, when King Philip took the third place, the leaders being still unchanged. They all closed up towards the. top turn with the exception of Rory O’More, who dropped away to the rear. At the turn Hercules led, but Sonnambula and King Philip deprived him of the lead and came on together, Sonnambula looking all over a winner as the King was at the whip. She failed to stay home, however, and the King won a fine race from Hercules, who came with a great, rash at the finish by a short neck. Time; 2min. 22sec. The takers, however, had the best of it the finish. The race requires little description; Bob. on the fall of the flag, at once took Tadmor to the front, and made steady running with him to the top turn, where Elfin King joined him, and a few yards fa ther were run, when the backers of Tadmor were aghast at the sight of Bob riding his horse as if for life. A good race home ensued, but Elfin King had the foot of his opponent, and eventually won by threequarters of a length. Time, 3min 38sec.
