BURGLARY AT TIMARU.
Mr Reece’s shop in Strathallan street, was burglariously entered on Monday night (says the Herald), and some articles stolen therefrom. The occurrence was not discovered til) yesterday morning, when the shopman came to open the premises. Upon entering the shop he noticed that some articles had been disarranged, and this led him to think that some person had been in since he left on the previous evening. He went to the back of the shop and saw that a window which looks into an open lean-to on theeastside of the building had been broken open, and that some person had been in and out by the aperture. An examination of the spot proved that the burglar was under the impression that the window, which was a sash one, was fastened in the usual manner, for he had cut a round hole with a diamond out of the pane of glass at the place where the fastenings of such windows are always placed. The window, however, was not fastened in the usual manner, but was nailed in. Finding that the window would not open, he had taken an American axe that was in the shed, forced the outside battens off which held the window fast, and wrenched half the window out of its position sufficiently to allow him to enter. Upon looking round the shop, it was discovered that a double-barrel breech loading gun had been taken of the value of £lO, also the leather apron of the shopman. The burglar had evidently examined the till, as it was out of its proper position, and placed on the counter. Luckily, no money had been left in it. The money was in a cashbox 'on the office table, but the box had not been taken, although it could have been seen from the shop, the partition being composed partly of glass, and the night being moonlight. The door of the office was locked, but the glass partition would not have been a sufficient obstacle in the robber’s way. The articles alluded to above are the only ones missed as yet, but it is quite possible that others have been taken.
