Melbourne, April 14. Mr Belcher has been returned for the South-Western province by a majority over Mr Wynne. The Catholic hierachy have found occasion to rejoice at this result, and announce that every election will he contested in favor of a change in the Education Act.

Java and the Straits settlements, as well as Fiji, will be represented at the Melbourne Exhibition in August, Mr B. Carroll, one of the members of the Assembly for Ararat, has been arrested for some extensive forgeries. The preliminary investigation is now being proceeded with. The Victoria Eacing Club have instituted a Champion Stakes for New Year’s Bay, consisting of a sweepstakes of 25 sovs each, with 1500 sovs added; three miles; weight for age.
