MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, April 19. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.)
Drunkenness. —The following jpersons were dealt with for drunkenness;—Charles Dee, fined 5s ; Lewis Burton, who was also charged with using obscence language and resisting the police, was fined 20s; Maori Jack, who was also charged with resisting the police and the wilful destruction of Government property, in breaking a small trapdoor in the cell, was fined 10s for drunkenness, cab-hire Is fid, damage to trap-door 3s. Donald McFarlane was remanded in custody, not being in a fit state to appear ; Samuel Smith was fined 10s ; and Jacob Cox, who had been sent to the Hospital, was remanded to the 22nd instant; and John Johnstone was fined ss.
V 4GRAKCY. —Edward Sampson was charged with vagrancy. Sergeant Wilson said that defendant had been arrested wandering near the cricket ground; ho had no means of subsistence, and was in a very filthy state. He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, with hard labor.
Attempting to Commit Suicide.—Wm, Sharp Cooper was charged with attempting to commit suicide by drowning in' the Avon. The defendant was drunk at the time. He was also charged with being drunk, resisting the police, and wilfully destroying Government property. Inspector Buckley said that defendant was bailed out yesterday, and went and got more drink. His Worship sentenced defendant to one month’s imprisonment, with hard labor. Neglected Children.— Duncan McKinlay, Malcolm McKinlay, John McKiulay, and James McKinlay, whose father and mother are in prison, were brought up under the “Neglected Childrens’ Act.” The eldest, Duncan McKinlay, was sent for three years, and the other three were sent for seven years each tc the Industrial school. Affiliation.— Jas. .Robinson was charged with neglecting to maintain the illegitimate child of Ann Breeze, of which it was alleged he was the father. Mr H. Slater appeared in support of the complainant, and Mr Thomas for defendant. After hearing the evidence, the Bench dismissed the case. Revision of Jury List—The Revision of the Jury List was adjourned until Thursday,
