MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, April 16. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, KM., and R. Westenra, jun, Esq, J.P.] Drunk and Disorderly. Thomas Prosser and James McVickers, charged with drunkenness, were each fined ss, and James Dunphy 10c. Threatening the Life of her Husband. —Mary Ann Cole was charged with threatening the life of her husband. Constable Morice deposed to arresting the defendant the previous day. When he visited the house she was in a most excited state, and he afterwards saw her chasing her husband. From what he had heard from the neighbors defendant was a terror to the neighborhood. Charles Cole gave evidence of his wife's violence. She had threatened his life repeatedly, on one occasion with a knife in her hand, and had repeatedly threatened that she would burn the house down about him. He had been compelled to sleep out of his house and under a hedge, and was in bodily fear of her. A witness named Pratt gave similar evidence. Defendant said all the annoyance was caused through another woman who visited the house. She (defendant) had always been brought up to be well behaved. His Worship told defendant that she seemed a perfect nuisance to the neighborhood. If she was so well behaved, she could easily find sureties for her good behavior, and would have to find two sureties in £lO each to keep the peace towards her husband for twelve months; in default one month's imprisonment. Embezzlement. Montague Fox Henry was charged on remand with embezzling monies belonging to Shadbolt and Co., of Sandhurst, Victoria. George Albert Cook, senior constable, stationed. at Sandhurst, Victoria, examined, produced a warrant signed by John Cogdon, a Police Magistrate for the colony of Victoria, for the arrest of Montague Fox Henry. That person was identical with the prisoner. Also produced the depositions of William George Bentley and David Murdoch, taken before John Cogdon, and also a receipt given by the prisoner for the amount embezzled. He was present when those depositions were taken, and saw them signed. He wished to have the prisoner remanded tp Victoria. His Worship granted an order for a remand to Victoria, prisoner to be detained in custody until the warrant is returned from Wellington.
