LINCOLN FARMERS’ CLUB AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
A general meeting was held in the Association’s room, Lincoln, on Tuesday last, the 13th instant, to receive report and balancesheet.
There was a very good attendance of members.
In the absence of the president and vicepresidents, on the motion of Mr Joseph Haydon, Mr John Gebbie took the chair. The secretary read the report, as follows: “ I have much pleasure in laying the first balance-sheet of the association (under the present amalagamated name) before the members, and to give a general resume of the affairs of the association. By the balancesheet, it will be seen that the association have a credit balance in the hands of their treasurer of £52 7s lOd. The total receipts, as will be seen, amount to £279 Is fid, which exceeds those of 1873 by £sl Os 3d, and the payments have been £155 15s for prizes, and £7O 18s 8d expenses, including all labor, material, advertising, printing, &c., leaving the above balance. Some members may think this is a large balance to have over and keep locked up, but it must be remembered that a greater part of this amount is made up by the sale of a quantity of the association’s material, which the committee determined to sell (and replace with more convenient yards). Besides, many extra subscriptions have come to hand, and prize money has been returned in some instances; these are items which the committee had not estimated when determining upon the list of prizes offered. The total number of exhibits at the show, which as usual was held on the first Tuesday in November were as follows. I also give the same for the year 1873. 1874 1873 Sheep ... 68 ... 69 Cattle ... 57 ... 55 Horses ... 59 ... 47 Pigs ... 9 ... 8 Implements 10 ... 11 Dairy produce 11 ... 6 214 196 Which shows an increase of eighteen exhibits over last year. “ The association prizes amounted to 107, being fifty-two first prizes, forty-six second prizes, and nine third prizes. The average value of the same being £1 9s Id. In addition to the foregoing statement, Messrs Wra Marcroft, and H. Stace offered prizes, but owing to there not being the required number of entries, the prizes were withheld. The total entrance money amounted to £65 5s ; or £2 7s 6d less than last year, and the receipts at the gates increased over that of 1873 by £4 7s. The total expenses amounted to £7O 18s Bd, which is £l2 7s 3d less than those incurred the year before. The band, which your committee engaged for the-day, appeared to be highly appreciated by the general public. By the members’ list I have prepared, it will be seen that the total number of the members of the association are eighty - one against fifty - nine members fast year, which accounts for the falling off in the amount of entrance money as shown above. It is anticipated (hat the annual show to be held
next November will show even a larger increase than the past shows. As far the number of people present it cannot fail to be far greater than previous shows, as the railway which is shortly to be opened will bring large numbers of people from Christchurch and other places, so that it will bo necessary for the, meetirg to-day to decide what improvements are to be made (with ♦he funds available) to the grounds and yards of the association. Your committee would most strongly recommend that more suitable and larger pens for cattle be erected than those that have been in use hitherto ; and to do this, it would be to the advantage of the association to authorise the works being carried out during the winter months when labor is not so scarce, and the work could be done at a less cost than if left until immediately previous to the show being held.”
The balance sheet was also submitted, which showed—Receipts, £279 Is 6d ; disbursements. £226 13s 8d ; leaving a balance of £52 17s lOd in the hands of the treasurer. There was also the amount of £2B 8s given as private prizes for competition. Mr R. Wright proposed, and Mr Walter Lawry seconded, “ That the report and balance sheet as read be adopted.” Carried. Mr W. Lawry bogged to move, “ That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to those gentlemen who gave private prizes for competition at the late show.” Carried. Mr D. O’Callaghan moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr W. A. Murray, secretary and treasurer, for the indefatigable manner he had worked. Carried. Moved by Mr R. Wright, seconded by Mr J. Haydon, “ That a yard committee be appointed to prepare plans and fix site for sixty pens for cattle, and report at next meeting, such committee to consist of Messrs W. Lawry, A. P. O’Callaghan, Jno. Gebbie, H. White, H. Pannett, Wm. Henderson, and Jas, Beaumont. Carried. Considerable discussion took place with reference to the scab, and it was thought desirable, as a suggestion to the Provincial Government, that the meeting should express its opinion by moving some resolution on the subject. The following resolutions were proposed and unanimously agreed to:—“ That in the opinion of this association the action of the authorities for the prevention of scab in the province has been very relaxed and reprehensible for allowing the scab to spread in the manner it has.” “ That this meeting would further recommend that the authorities spare no labor or expense in stamping out the scab as soon as possible, as the meeting are in possession of facts to prove that scabby sheep have been straying through the district during the last few days,” After some remarks by Mr Jasp6r O’Callaghan on the subject of scab, the meeting separated.
