Gbahamstown, April 12.

The Tairua goldfield is exciting considerable interest. Three leases have been registered to-day, and a number of miners’ rights taken out. The goldfields engineer has set about improving the track there. Warden Fraser goes there on Wednesday. Auckland, April 18. A son of Mr Stewart, civil engineer, who had been missing for the last few days, has been found amongst the Maories at Orakei. At the South British Company’s halfyearly meeting, the report showed that the premiums received amounted to £45,220, and the total receipts to £60,671. The fire and marine losses amounted to £24,635, and there was carried to capital account £7812, and a dividend was paid at the rate of 10 per cent on £50,000 capital, and carried forward £14,662 to new profit and loss account. Nelson, April 12.

A terrible accident occurred on the Port road, where the hill is being excavated to obtain material for the railway earthwork. About fifty tons fell, burying two men named Downes and Kelly. The former is an old settler ; the latter a recent immigrant by the Adamant. Twenty minutes elapsed before the bodies were recovered. Both were dead, one lying across the other. Downes leaves a widow and nine children, ana Kelly a widow and four children. Wellington, April 12. Denis Wright, charged by W. S. Moorhouse with obtaining money from him under false pretences, has been committed for trial this morning.

Waimate, April 12. The first issue of the Tribune, a local paper, has been published. A carter driving to Timaru capsized the vehicle and was killed.

Dunedin, April 13. At the criminal sessions yesterday, Henry Pearce was acquitted on a charge of robbery from a man in a house of ill fame. John Haggarty was convicted of stabbing constable Vernon at Green Island. George Johnston, after a protracted trial, was found guilty of rape on his step-daughter. Sentence was deferred.

[FROM OUR AUCKLAND CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, April 12. An action for libel, £IOOO damages, has been brought by Mr Shera, of McArthur, Shera, & Co, against the Star for publishing a letter by Mr Hannaford, re undisposed surplus of the Tauranga relief fund, and a counter claim has been made by Mr Reed, one of the proprietors of the Star, against Mr Shera for £IOOO damages for calling him “An impertinent slanderer” in a letter in the Herald. The case has been referred to arbitiation at the repeated request of Mr Shera. Sir George Grey was nominated arbitrator by Messrs Reed and Brett and accepted by Mr Shera. He has agreed to act.

A fire at the native settlement at Orakau destroyed five whares and two storehouses, which contained the winter stock of potatoes. The whole settlement, men, women, and children, turned out with branches to beat down the flames.

[FROM OUR WELLINGTON CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, April 12. The mis-management of the Hutt railway has culminated in the coaches recommencing to run regularly between the Hutt and the city in opposition to the trains. This morning the coach was quite full, and the train nearly empty. The coach did the distance in the shortest time.

[FROM OUR DUNEDIN CORRESPONDENT.] Dunedin, April 12. The news from the Bendigo reefs is still of the most cheerful character. The newly discovered reefs running parallel with the Cromwell Company’s claim show unmistakable evidence of permanency. From Jones’ claim first class stone is being raised, and the reef has widened out to eighteen inches. Other claims in the locality show equally .well. From the Cromwell Company’s No. 2 lease, magnificent stone estimated to yield fully a pound weight of gold to the ton is being raised. Another discovery is reported in the neighbourhood of the Alta Company’s ground. Several parcels of stone have been broken from the reef, the whole being thickly impregnated with gold. In the Arrow district, nearly ten ounces of gold were stolen on Saturday evening from Mrs Jenkins’ store at Macetown during her temporary absence. J hree Chinese were in the store at the time. The thief is still undiscovered.

The right to hold a racing lottery or sweep will be tried at the City Police Court tomorrow morning. Dodson, proprietor of the Empire Hotel, has been summoned by the police for selling a ticket for a chance in a lottery known as a “Monster Derby.” Three charges of a like nature have been laid. The police are acting on the instructions of Mr Bathgate. He has taken proceedings against one of the leading firms who on Wednesday will be called upon to answer four charges laid by a machinist lately in the employ of the firm, of infringing the Employment of Females Act. Two charges are for employing complainant for more than eight hours a day, and the others for compelling her to work after two o’clock on Saturday, 3rd April, the said day being a holiday, contrary to the fourth section of the Act. Much interest centres in the cases.
