BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Monday, April 12. The weekly meeting of the Board of Education was held at 7 p.m. Present —Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), A. Duncan, H. R. Webb, and J. N. Tosswill. PIGEON BAY, A memorandum was read from the inspector, stating that the average attendance was only ten, and suggesting that the committee be written to, stating that unless the average attendance was increased the services of the master would be discontinued. The Chairman stated that an explanatory letter had been received from the committee, setting forth the various causes of the small attendance, which it was hoped would in future increase. The matter was referred to the inspector. PBEBBLETON. A letter was read from the district committee, stating that the schoolmaster’s house was finished, and had been passed by the committee ; also, asking what was to be done with the old house. The Board decided that the old building was to be sold, and the district would be credited with their proportion of the proceeds as their contribution towards the onesixth of cost payable by the district. IRWELL, A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, requesting the Board to reconsider their decision as to the tenders for the erection of the Irwell school buildings, and asking the Board to sanction the tender previously recommended by the committee. The Board’s estimate being very considerably below the amount of the tender referred to, the former decision was confirmed. HEATHCOTB VALLEY. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, asking the Board to sanction the acceptance by the committee of certain tenders for repairs ; also stating that the committee proposed raising onesixth of the amount required by the sale of certain old buildings now standing on the school grounds, but if the Board did not approve then the amount to be raised by rate in the usual way. The Board approved of the tenders being accepted. The Board approved of the sale of the old building, the proceeds to be paid into the treasury. The sum of £lO to be paid within a week, or the Board would recommend a rate to be struck. WAITOHI PLAT. A letter was read from the chairman of the district school committee, asking the Board to sanction the payment of Mr Mahon’s salary as master from 81st March last. The Board granted the request. governor’s bay. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, asking the Board to sanction the payment of £25 for building a porch. The Board agreed to pay the amount. PAPANUI. A letter was read from the chairman of the district committee, asking the Board to cause a special rate to be levied for raising onesixth of the sum of £39 for fencing ; also stating that ere long the Board’s sanction would be asked for the erection of an additional wing to the school at a cost of £SOO, and the committee suggested that a special rate should be levied for one-sixth of that sum together with one-sixth of the sum of £39 previously alluded to. The Board decided to sanction the raising of a rate, if the amount was required for the building voted by the Provincial Council. CHRISTCHURCH WEST. A letter was read from the secretary of the district committee, asking the Board to sanction a rise of salary to Mr Smith, assistant master at the Durham street school, from £9O to £IOO per annum ; also, requesting the Board to sanction the appointment of Miss C. C. Edwards as pupil teacher at Lincoln road school, and stating that as Miss Stothard had given notice of her intention to resign as mistress of the Lincoln road school the Board requested permission to advertise for a mistress at a salary of £2OO per annum, and further asking the Board to request the Government to place upon the estimates the snm of £IOOO for building a house for the head master of Lincoln road school.
The Board decided with regard to Mr Smith’s salary that as they hud the subject of salaries under consideration, the matter would then be considered. The Board sanctioned Miss C. 0, Edwards’ appointment, and approved of the committee advertising for a successor to Miss Stothard, but at the same time requested the secretary to inform the committee that Miss Perry, an English mistress, had at present only temporary employment, and was open for an engagement. LYTTELTON.
A letter from Mr N, Phillips, one of the masters who had served for two and a half years, asking for a certificate as second-class master, he being now in the third class. Referred to the Board of Examiners, INSPECTORS’ REPORTS.
Reports from the inspectors of schools were read.
RANGIORA, A letter was read from the inspector of schools, stating that Miss Ellen H. Hurrell and Master W. Banks had been appointed pupil teachers. The Board sanctioned both appointments. BUSINESS DONE BY THE CHAIRMAN, The Board approved of the business transacted by the chairman. The Board then adjourned.
