COMMERCIAL.

The grain market continues active, and exports are being made on a large scale. The Medora cleared during the week for Auckland, and the Waimate and W. W. Smith are loading for London, the Albion for Adelaide, and the Australian Sovereign for Wellington. Some of these shipments have necessitated purchases for immediate delivery, which have had the .effect of advancing prices for prime wheat to 3s Id or 3s 2d for very choice. Sales, however, have been light during the week, and it is evident the advance in price has materially checked the demand. Jb'lour is firm at £9 for bakers’ parcels in sacks, and bran at £3 15s at the mills. Trime samples of malting barley are selling at ss, Now the season is approaching for sowing for next year, we would advise farmers to put a greater breadth of barley under crop than has been done for some seasons past, as a large and increasing demand is springing up from Australia for this cereal. Experience shows that barley sown early in May makes the best sample as a rule, and generally ripens before the caterpillars can do much damage. It will be worth while to bear this in mind and sow early. Oats are steady at 2s 4d for feed samples and 2s 6d for prime milling. Potatoes are offering at 35s for forward delivery and 40s for immediate delivery. Butter is worth Is 3d and cheese Bd. The business transacted in the import markets during the past week has hardly been up to the average. Goods are coming to hand freely from ship’s side, and good work has been done in loading vessels on the berth for Lend m. The cargo of Mauritius sugar, ex Amy, was offered by public auction on Tuesday, when about 2700 pockets were sold at the following rates White crystals, £33 10s to £3O; white counters, £33 10s to £34 10s ; yellow crystals, £32 10s to £33;yellow counters, £2910s to £3olos i.b. There was a fair attendance of the trade, yet the bidding was anything but spirited. Since the. above sale we hear of about 3500 pockets placed privately at a cons derable advance on the above prices ; traders are buying largely, and securing their winter stocks at the low rates now ruling:—Yarraville and Victorian Company’s sugars have been sold in small trade parcels at fair rates. In teas we have to report several large sales at the following figures is 5d to Is 7d for medium, Is 8d to Is lOd for good ; finer sorts have been quitted as high as 2s 3d to 2s 4d i.b. With the exception of Hennessy’s case brandy, which has met with great attention at 2»s to 29s 5d in large parcels, spirits have not called for any remark beyond the usual trade sales. Tobaccos have been rather dull; best twist in case is quoted Is 9id to Is lOd ;in J-tierces Is 9d to is 9jd i.b.
