MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
iU.AUJLkI X XVA X .UM WvHiJLMi CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, April 7. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M., and Col. Packe, J.P.] Child Desertion. Agnes Gwatkin, who had been admitted to bail on a warrant from Dunedin, did not appear when called, and his Worship ordered the warrant to be executed. Complaint Against a Pawnbroker.— Samuel Stewart appeared to answer a complaint made by the detective police that he had given incorrect information about a stolen coat when a member of that force had called at his shop in reference to it. Mr Thomas appeared for Mr Stewart. ChiefDetective l east reiterated what he had said the previous day in court, that Stewart had stated the coat had been redeemed, knowing at the same time that it was then in his possession, and called evidence to show that Stewart had told a person that the man who pawned the coat had sold the ticket, and that the coat had been taken out by the purchaser. Mr Thomas produced the books of the defendant, which showed an entry of the coat having been pawned on the 16th for ss, taken out the same day, and pledged again on that night for Bs. He (Stewart) had been guided by the first entry when replying to the police, but had failed to observe the second entry. The mistake had been purely an error. His Worship said it was one of those errors which left a very strong impression, and it would be as well for Mr Stewart to prevent a repetition of such errors, or his license might be affected.
