NEWS OF THE DAY.

Lyttelton Yacht Club.—A general meeting of the members of the Lyttelton Yncht Club will be held at the Mitre Hotel this evening at eight o'clock. City Rate.—The rate of one shilling in the £ for general city purposes for the year 187/5, was made at last night's sitting of the Council, and will be due on and after Ist May. Carpenters' and Joiners' Society.— The half-yearly meeting of this society will be held this evening at Dann's Oxford Hotel for the purpose of electing officers, and to take into consideration the advisableness of joining the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. The Lyttelton Murder Case.—The Grand Jury this morning found a true Bill against Joha Mercer for murder. The Court fixed Friday morning for the trial. The witnesses in this case will not be required to attend until Friday morning at 10 o'clock. The Cabmen and the Railway.—At the suggestion of Or Gapes the Mayor promised last evening to confer with the city solicitor as to the advisableness of requesting the Government to refuse to allow unlicensed cabmen to stand inside the railway gates. Miss Christian. —It will be noticed that this lady's appearances in Christchurch are positively limited to the Rev Charles Clark's entertainments. She will make her first appearance in Wellington on Monday next, on which occasion His Excellency the Governor and the Marchioness of Normanby, through the Private Secretary, have telegraphed their intention of being present.

Police Protection.—Cr Raphael drew attention last evening to the necessity of more police protection being provided at night time on the North and East town belts, and suggested that two mounted men should patrol that neighborhood. He stated that numerous complaints had reached him of families being annoyed at various times after dark by the visits of vagrants. Grant in Aid to the City.—A public meeting, convened by his Worship the Mayor in accordance with a requisition signed by sixty-two ratepayers, will be held to-morrow evening in the Music Hall at seven o'clock, to consider the propriety of petitioning the Provincial Council, to take into serious consideration the necessity of carrying out the public works on a more extensive scale than hitherto, such extension being rendered absolutely necessary on sanitary grounds by the recent large influx of population. Supreme Court.—The April criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened yesterday, at 11 a.m., before his Honor, Mr Justice Williams. The cases disposed of were Regina v. Philip Green, burglary and previous conviction, sentenced to five years' penal servitude ; Regina v Alexander Le Bas, forgery and uttering, sentence deferred ; Regina v. Frederick Cooper, forgery and uttering (two cases), sentence deferred ; Regina v Frederick Wm. Turner, larceny as a bailee, twelve months' imprisonment; Regina v John Montgomery, burglary (found guilty of larceny only), twelve months* imprisonment.

Theatre Royal.—" The Hunchback" was produced last evening at the Theatre, and attracted a very numerous audience to witness its representation. Miss Colville, of course, appeared in the part of Julia, and the numerous plaudits which she received throughout the piece showed that her conception of the part found many admirers amongst the audience. Mrs Hill, too, was well received in the part of Helen. Mr Hoskins and Mr Collier came in for their share of approbation, and both these gentlemen were successful in their different parts. The piece was well put on the stage, and was played very creditably throughout.

Now that contagions diseases are abroad, every housewife should use carbolic soap for household purposes, as it is a thorough disinfectant, and recommended by the faculty.
