Mr Woolrych, a stipendiary magistrate, refused recently the evidence of a Mr Leonard, of Chelsea, because on being about to be sworn, he confessed himself an atheist. About 20,000 persons assembled in Bingley Hall, Birmingham, to hear Mr Bright. The right hon gentleman confined his speech to the question of the disestablishment of the State Church, of which he approves. During the year 1874, 121,934 emigrants sailed from the Mersey for various parts of the world. This number is less by 67,463 than that of 1873. One great reason of the falling off is the depressed state of trade in the United States, to which many young Germans emigrated, via Liverpool, to avoid the military conscription in their own land.”
