CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
A meeting of the Board of Governors was held at the Public Library yesterday, at 4 p.m. Present—Mr Justice Gresson (in the chair), Rev W. W. Wilcocks, Rev W. J. Habens, his Honor the Superintendent, Messrs Tanced, .Gould, Knight, Potts, Webb, and Dr Turnbull. The Chairman read a report from the Library Committee. It was resolved—" That the Library be opened between the hours of 5 and 6 p.m. That the Library Committee be requested to confer with the architect, and request him to modify the present design, or to prepare a fresh one, to come within the amount at the disposal of the Board." The following resolution, of which notice of motion had been given at the last meeting, was moved by Dr Turnbull—" That a Vice-Chairman of the College be appointed who shall be ex officio member of all committees, and who shall take the chair at the meetings of the Board in the absence of the chairman." Rev W. J. Habens seconded the motion.
After some discussion, the motion was negatived. The Chairman stated that the following resolution had been passed by the College committee :— '■ That considering the present uncertainty as to the site upon which the College shall be built, it is desirable to secure the land now belonging to the Refuge, and contiguous to the property of the College." Rev W. J. Habens moved—" That the Board adopt the recommendation of the Site of the College Committee with reference to the purchase of the site of the Refuge." His Honor the Superintendent seconded the motion, vhich was agreed to. A letter was read from Professor Bickerton, inclosing a list of apparatus of the value of £714 15s 6d, which would be useful for teaching chemistry and physics, and also in connection with the public works. Also asking whether his assistant might occupy certain unoccupied rooms in a cottage on the college site, stating that he proposed to give three lectures on agricultural chemistry during the vacation.
It was resolved that the Government be asked to place a sum on the Estimates for purchase of additional apparatus for the chemistry department, and that a statement of requirements as drawn up by Professor Bickerton be forwarded to the Government; that the assistant to the professor of chemistry be allowed the use of the rooms in'the cottage on the College site until they are required for some other purpose. That Prof. Bickerton's application with regard to popular lectures on agricultural chemistry be referred to the College committee. It was moved by the Rev W. W. Willock, seconded by Mr Tancred, and agreed to—- " That the terms formerly fixed by the University of New Zealand, be kept for the year ending 31st December, 1875. It was moved by Mr Tancred, seconded by Rev W. Willock, and agreed to—" That the college committee be empowered to prescribe the course of studies to be followed by the scholars H. Cotterill and W. H. Atack, and also to prepare a general scheme." The Board then adjourned.
