NEWS OF THE DAY.
Bank Holidays.—We have been requested to state that the Bank of New South Wales and the Bank of Australasia have both refused to close their respective banks on Saturday next. Business will therefore be carried on as usual. Waitaki Bridge.— The North Otago Times of March 20th says : —We are glad to learn that the sinking of cylinders for this work (by far the most difficult part of the will be completed within a week or ten days, there remaining now only five to be placed in position. Sunday Observance League.—The Rev A. F. Douglas will deliver an address this evening in the Congregational schoolroom, on the " Relationship between Sabbath observance and spiritual religion." The chair will be taken at 7.30 p.m.
Theatre Royal.—" The Octoroon" was repeated last evening at the theatre, with Miss Lizzie Bushe as Zoe, and Mr Collier as Salem Scudder. To-night the company will appear again, and on Saturday it is intended to produce " Formosa." U.C.C.C. V C.C.C.—Cricketers engaged in this match are reminded that it will be continued on Saturday next, at 2 p.m. sharp. Any gentleman unable to play on that day is requested to communicate with the captain of his side, in order that his place may be filled up.
Waltham Wesleyan Church. The anniversary of the Wesleyan church at Waltham will be celebrated by a tea meeting to-morrow, followed by a public meeting, at which addresses will be delivered by the Revs A. R. Fitchett, J. Buller, G. Bond, &c. During the evening the choir will perform selections of music. Supreme Court Vacation.—The Easter vacation of the Supreme Court will commence after to-day, and continue until Wednesday, 31st inst, when his Honor the Judge will sit for the last time, and deliver judgment in re Middleton and McQuade. An address from the Bar will be presented on the same day. New Buildings at the Railway.— The new offices for the use of the engineer's department, immediately facing the Christchurch station, are now nearly completed, and besides possessing a very sightly exteri u r> their internal arrangements are very complete. A new shed has also recently be yn built for the reception of the steam fire engine near the end of the station platform, and the locality is the most suitable that could be devised.
Inspection Parade.—The usual inspection of the Head Quarters Corps of Volunteers took place last evening, at the drill shed. In the absence of Lieut-Colonel Packe, Captain Hawkes, as senior captain, acted as inspecting officer. There was a very good muster of all corps, those on parade being the Christchurch Artillery, under Captain Craig and Lieut Stansell; the Engineers, under Captain Pavitt; City Guards, under Captain Hawkes; and the Cadets, under Lieut Caverhill. After inspection and going through some evolutions the battalion was dismissed,
Oxford Railway.—A further length of this line to the Carleton station will be opened on Easter Monday. Protestant Alliance.—The quarterly meeting of the Queen's Own Lodge will be held this evening, instead of on Monday next.
Registration of Votes.—The interest excited by the last Kaiapoi election will result in the addition this year of at least 300 new claims to vote being sent in. Lumpers' Society.—A dinner of the Lyttelton Lumpers' Society takes place at Mr Cole's Hotel to-night, and we hear that Captain Keddy will occupy the chair. Holiday. A notice appears in the Gazette, stating that the Provincial Government offices will be closed on Good Friday, on Saturday, and on Easter Monday and Tuesday. Gold Mining Company.—The prospectus of a company for the purpose of working a prospecting claim, situated on the Waiho river. South Canterbury, has been issued. The proposed capital is £SOOO.
Appointments.—Mr J. W. Cotterell is appointed Assistant Surveyor ; Mr D. N. Inwood has been appointed a member of the South Orari Board of Conservators, in the room of Mr H. J. Gladstone; Mr T. O. Rayner is appointed returning officer at the election of a member of the Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works. Canterbury Rifle Association.—A numerously attended meeting of the council of the Canterbury Rifle Association was held last evening, at Warner's Hotel, to complete arrangements for their annual Easter meeting. A valuable and varied assortment of articles were exhibited and selected as prizes, and we feel sure these only require to be seen to stimulate the zeal of all our marksmen. The arrangements-for Easter Monday were reported as very complete. LieutColonel Packe has consented to take command for the diy, and the 7 am. train will stop at the range. Rangiora Rajes.—A meeting of the committee was held on Tuesday evening at the Red Lion Hotel. There were present Messrs J. Lilly (in the chair), Cone, Wheeler, Bramley, Mulcock, Jones, Rickurs, Corr, S. Wilson, B. Murfit, Aherne, and Vallance. Subscriptions amounting to £4O were reported to have been paid or promised. A programme was drawn up, which will be advertised in the Press of Saturday, including five flat races, a hurdle race, and trotting match. The officers appointed were —Judge, Mr M. Jones ; starter, Mr W. Bramley ; clerk of the course, Captain Parsons ; and clerk of the scales, Mr J. Wheeler. Nine stewards were also elected. It was resolved the first race take place punctually at twelve noon ; that a dinner be held in the evening at the Red Lion Hotel, when prizes will be paid. The meeting adjourned till Saturday evening, when it will meet at the CI ib Hotel.
Now that contagious diseases are abroad, every housewife should use carbolic soap for household purposes, as it is a thorough disinfectant, and recommended by the faculty.— [Advt.]
