ROAD BOARDS.

AVON. The Board met on March 15th, all thn members present. The minutes of the last meeting were reac and confirmed. The overdraft at the bank is £459 ss. A letter was read from Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw in reference, to the conveyance of land for the Horseshoe outlet. The clerk was directed to reply. A letter was received from the Government, informing the Board that the grant on account of the General Government was ready its receipt. The Board directed that an estimate of receipts and expenditure be made by next meeting for the current year, preparatory to striking a rate. The surveyor's report was read and considered It was decided that £75 be paid to Hackebt on account of his contract, but that he be informed that no further sum would be paid until the work was completed. Mr Sycamore saw the Board in reference to the amount due for the footpaths in High flfcl'PPt "*5»It was decided that the claim, £l2 10s, be paid, Messrs Lodge and others saw the Board in reference to the Sandhills road, Waimakariri They were informed that the road should receive a fair share of the rates expended upon it when the Board was expending ics funds on that portion of the district. Mr Hawkins saw the Board, and offered to pay half the cost of clearing the canal drain from Reece's road to the Styx. He agreed to undertake the clearing at 3s per chain, to the satisfaction of the Board surveyor. The Board to pay half that amount He was told to do the work. The clerk was directed to write to the Riccarton Road Board in reference to shingling the Harewood road by Papanui. Accounts to the amount of £272 19s were passed, and the Board adjourned. AKAROA AND WAINUI. A meeting of this Board was held at the Road Board office, Akaroa, on Saturday, the 13th inst. The members present were — Messrs Saxton, Piper, Meech, and Keegan. Letters were received from the Secretary for Public Works advising the Board that the sum of £IOO will be forwarded to the credit of the Board to meet advances on works under Wainui road special grant; and also advising that the sum of £274 13s 6d has been allotted to this district f0r1«74-5 nnder the General Government grant to Eoad Boards. A letter was received from the Secretary for Public Works inquiring when the Pigeon Bay road would be safe for traffic. The clerk was instructed to reply, stating that the contracts and works now in hand on the Pigeon Bay road will be completed in about three months. Letters were received from the Central Board of Health requesting to be furnished with a report of the sanitary state of the district. And from the Registrar-General, for a return of the statistics of the district for 1874. Letters were received from the district engineer, drawing the attention of the Board to the state of portions of the Pigeon Bay road, and suggesting sundry alterations and repairs to the main road. A letter was received from B. T. Missen tind others requesting that the Grehan Valley be formed. The clerk was directed to reply that the Board anticipated the receipt of funds from the forthcoming estimates, 1875, to effect the work required. A letter was read from M. M. Jones and others, requesting that the approach to the old Barry's Bay Hill road may be diverted, in order to procure a better access to Barry's Bay beach. The question of road diversion referred to above was deferred for further consideration. A tender was accepted for metalling portion of theßalgueri road. A telegram was received from the Government, stating that Judge Gresson had decided that Resident Magistrates Courts have no jurisdiction over Road Boards. A letter was received from R. D. Thomas, relative to claim preferred against the Board by Mr A. Maclain. A letter was received from Dr 0. J. Foster, relative to a claim preferred against the Board by R. Greening. The chairman was requested to obtain the necessary legal advice relative to the above claims. Accounts to the amount of £442 10s 4d were passed for payment, and the meeting then adjourned.
